Who Was Jim Nantz’s College Roommate? A Look at His Friendship With Fred Couples

Earlier this year, sportscaster Jim Nantz—best known for his commentary on the NFL and NCAA men’s basketball tournament—was photographed with longtime friend and golf legend Fred Couples.

The two have known each other for decades, having met as college students at the University of Houston, and have remained close ever since.

Nantz recently introduced Couples as he received the Seattle Sports Commission’s Royal Brougham Award, a fitting tribute from a friend who has been by his side since the beginning.

    How Did Nantz Meet Couples?

Nantz and Couples first crossed paths at the University of Houston, where both were members of the Cougars’ golf team—and roommates.

In an interview with Claire Rogers on The Scoop, Couples credited Nantz for helping him make it through college.

“We did everything together, and he kinda got us through school,” Couples said when asked about their long-standing friendship.

While Nantz has stepped away from NCAA Tournament broadcasting, one thing he hasn’t left behind is his support for the Cougars. He was seen this year at the tournament decked out in Cougar red, cheering for his alma mater.

“Cougar red, it’s always in my blood. Everyone saw Jim Nantz last week in more red than I even have in my closet right now,” Couples joked to media before a Pro-Am event.

Jim Nantz Called His Friend’s Greatest Victory

Though Nantz was part of the University of Houston golf team, it was Couples who went on to a storied professional career, winning 15 PGA Tour events, 14 PGA Tour Champions titles, and, of course, the 1992 Masters.

That Masters victory was made even more special because it was Nantz who called it on the broadcast.

Following the win, Nantz gave a heartfelt nod to their college days in a moment that left his old roommate emotional.

“We all said, someday you’re going to be wearing the green jacket,” Nantz told Couples before he collected the trophy.
