Meet Nikolas Khamenia’s Parents
Nikolas Khamenia was born on Dec. 27, 2006, in North Hollywood, Calif., and basketball runs in his blood. His father, Valery “Val” Khamenia, played collegiate basketball at George Washington University. However, he later transitioned into coaching. Today, he serves as an assistant basketball coach at Los Angeles Valley College, where he mentors young athletes.
Growing up with a father so immersed in the game must have given Nikolas an early advantage. This also exposed him to high-level basketball concepts and training from an early age.
While less is known about Nikolas’s mother, one thing is clear: his parents created an environment where basketball and discipline were equally valued. Coming from a Belarusian background, Nikolas’s family instilled in him the importance of hard work and dedication.
By the time he reached middle school, Nikolas was already showing signs of being a special talent. He played in competitive youth leagues and quickly gained attention for his polished skill set. Nikolas attended Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, a powerhouse program known for producing elite-level athletes.
During his junior year, he averaged 14.0 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game, showcasing his ability to contribute in multiple ways. His success at Harvard-Westlake also extended to the AAU circuit, where he played for the Basketball Training Institute (BTI) on the Puma Pro16 circuit.
The Athlete’s International Success and College Commitment
Nikolas wasn’t just making a name for himself in high school—he was shining on the international stage as well. He represented the United States at the 2024 FIBA Under-18 AmeriCup, where he helped Team USA secure a gold medal.
He averaged 7.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game, proving that he could perform under pressure on the world stage.
His dominance didn’t stop there. He also participated in the 2024 FIBA 3×3 U18 World Cup, where he was named tournament MVP after leading Team USA to another gold medal.
With all these accolades piling up, it was only a matter of time before major college programs came calling. In October 2024, Nikolas committed to Duke University, choosing the Blue Devils over prestigious offers from UCLA and Gonzaga.
