The Kansas Jayhawks basketball team announced Wednesday that Jacque Vaughn, a standout guard for KU in the 1990s under Roy Williams, is returning to the Jayhawks as an assistant coach. Vaughn, who ranks third all-time in assists for the Jayhawks, brings with him decades of experience as a former NBA player and coach.
By his side is his wife, Laura Vaughn, who has been a steady presence throughout his professional journey. While Jacque’s achievements have often made headlines, Laura has played a vital, behind-the-scenes role, offering unwavering support.

The couple married in 2003 after dating throughout college and beyond, well before Jacque secured an NBA title with the San Antonio Spurs in 2007.
Their relationship, rooted in their Kansas beginnings, has continued through Vaughn’s 12-year NBA career. His coaching journey led to his most recent position as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets and now, a return to his alma mater.
Laura Vaughn has largely stayed out of the spotlight, preferring to focus on family. She occasionally attends games, offering visible support from the stands, especially during Jacque’s time with the Brooklyn Nets. The couple has two children, and Laura is actively involved in the basketball training of their elder son, Jalen.
Kansas head coach Bill Self welcomed the Vaughns, saying, “We’re very excited to welcome Jacque and [his wife] Laura into the fold. “I’ve known Jacque from a distance for several years now and have always admired how he has conducted himself professionally and how he has treated people.”
He praised Vaughn’s professionalism and character, noting that he will be “an excellent addition” and a strong mentor within the program.

“I’m truly honored and overwhelmed with excitement to return to my alma mater and join Coach Self’s staff,” Vaughn said. “I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to bring those experiences back to the school that means so much to me. It’s a blessing to once again be part of the Jayhawk tradition.”
Vaughn is now the first former NBA head coach to join the Kansas coaching staff. As the Jayhawks navigate roster changes and aim for a deeper NCAA tournament run, his return brings both experience and continuity to a storied program.
