Who Are Liam Murphy’s Parents? The Family Behind the Transfer’s Success

Liam Murphy’s rise from a Staten Island preps standout to a Purdue Boilermakers transfer is deeply rooted in a strong athletic family foundation.

The 6’7″ forward, born June 6, 2002, is the son of Eileen and Joseph Murphy. His mother, Eileen, competed in basketball and swimming at Stony Brook, a dual-sport background that likely shaped Liam’s athletic trajectory.

Murphy starred at St. Peter’s Boys High School, earning two all-state selections and capturing the Jacques Award as Staten Island’s top player. He was named CHSAA Staten Island Division Player of the Year in 2020 and helped lead the Eagles to three consecutive borough championships.

Remarkably, he became the only player in school history to score 1,000 points in just 46 games. He served as team captain in both the 2017-18 and 2019-20 seasons.

At Columbia, Murphy played in 20 games as a sophomore, all starts. During the 2022–23 campaign, Murphy made six starts across 16 appearances, matched his season-best with 13 points in the finale at Cornell, and averaged 21.2 minutes per game.

Basketball runs deep in the Murphy family, with cousin Reilly Walsh at NJIT, Kristen Dealy, a former Notre Dame volleyball standout, and Tara Franklin competing in soccer at St. Bonaventure. Liam’s uncle, Matt Murphy, coaches at Newtown High School, further extending the family’s deep sports ties.
