Chad Baker-Mazara, a rising star for the Auburn Tigers, has captivated college basketball fans with his sharp defense, versatility, and elite shooting. But behind every great athlete is a story, and for Chad, it begins with two remarkable parents: Derrek Baker and Carmen Mazara.

A Basketball Legacy: Meet Derrek Baker and Carmen Mazara
Chad’s father, Derrek Baker, is no stranger to the game. A former South Carolina State University student-athlete, Derrek played for the Bulldogs from 1984 to 1985 before launching a professional career overseas. His love for basketball didn’t stop at playing, he transitioned into coaching and has since made a name for himself internationally.
As of March 2025, Derrek is the Head Defensive Coach for the Dominican Republic Men’s National Basketball Team, a role he’s held for eight years. His extensive experience and basketball IQ have had a major influence on Chad’s development, not just in terms of skill but also in understanding the mental and tactical side of the game.
Despite his professional background, Derrek never forced basketball on Chad. When Chad showed serious interest, Derrek guided him strategically, always pushing him to play the wing, even if he was the tallest on the court.
By age 11 or 12, Chad was already training with professional teams coached by his dad, setting the foundation for a promising basketball career.
While Derrek’s basketball pedigree is well-documented, Chad’s mother, Carmen Mazara, brings a quieter but equally powerful influence. Originally from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Carmen has been a constant support system in Chad’s life, even when separated by thousands of miles.
Though less is publicly known about Carmen’s background, her emotional presence and unwavering support have helped shape Chad’s mindset and resilience, especially during tough times in his academic and athletic journey.
From Setbacks to Stardom
Chad’s road to Auburn wasn’t without bumps. After stopping points at Duquesne and San Diego State, academic struggles led him to take a junior college route, where he rebounded with a stellar season in Florida. That season reignited his career and attracted attention from powerhouse programs in the SEC.
In the end, Auburn University felt like home. The visit, combined with genuine interest from head coach Bruce Pearl, his coaching staff, and future teammates like Dylan Cardwell and Denver Jones, made the decision easy.
