Shamika, his mother, gave him the nickname “Boogie” due to his early love for dancing. She recalls, “Boogie was always dancing, it started when he was a toddler. We’d go to functions, and Boogie was dancing. I would say, ‘C’mon, Boogie,’ and everyone started calling him that.”
John introduced Boogie to basketball when he was only three years old. He would bring Boogie to the park, teaching him the basics of basketball and a passion that would gain strength with the years.
The family’s support showed very well in his high school career at Archbishop Stepinac, where he led the team to consecutive CHSAA titles, 2023 and 2024. Their presence at games, support, and inspiration had a positive influence on his development and confidence.
Coming from the Bronx, Boogie had a community full of resilience and hard work. His parents ensured that he remained humble, and he remembered where he was from. It wasn’t merely basketball; it was the academic mindset, respect, and doing it right.
That family mindset guided him while making the biggest decisions for his career. He de-committed from Kentucky and followed Coach John Calipari to Arkansas, a tough decision made easier by the support of his parents.

In his first year at Arkansas, Boogie averaged 13.5 points, 5.1 assists, and 3.2 rebounds a game. Those were impressive numbers for a first-year player, and they revealed his capability to go to the next level.
