Where Did Jason Williams Play College Basketball?

Before Jason Williams played on the NBA hardcourts with no-look passes and behind-the-back wizardry, he was better known as “White Chocolate.” Williams was drafted in 1998 and brought his flashy streetball style to the big leagues.

Williams spent 12 seasons with teams like the Sacramento Kings, Memphis Grizzlies, and Miami Heat. In 2006, he won an NBA Championship with the Heat. But long before the confetti fell, Williams’ journey began in collegiate courts.

Jason Williams and His Collegiate Hoop Journey

Jason Williams’ college path didn’t follow a straight line. It spun like one of his no-look passes. Williams had initially committed to Providence College, but when coach Rick Barnes left the program, Williams changed his mind. He ended up at Marshall University, and that is all thanks to Billy Donovan.

Donovan had just taken the reins at Marshall, and Williams redshirted his first year. But soon, he stepped back onto the court for the 1995–96 season. That year, he averaged 13.4 points and 6.4 assists per game. When Donovan jumped ship to coach at the University of Florida, Williams followed his mentor.

Due to NCAA rules, he had to sit out the 1996–97 season. But when he finally donned the Gators jersey in the 1997–98 season, Jason Williams was still at his peak. He was the starting point guard and averaged 17.1 points, 6.7 assists, and nearly 3 steals a game. He even dropped a school-record 17 assists in a single game against Duquesne.

Under Williams’ leadership, Florida pulled off an epic 86–78 upset win over the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington. That’s college basketball royalty getting dunked on. It looked like the Gators were about to ride “White Chocolate” straight to stardom. But then came an unfortunate hurdle.

In February 1998, Jason Williams was suspended for the remainder of the season after his third cannabis-related violation. Florida had already handed him two prior suspensions, and the third strike meant he was out. And not just for the season but for good. Just like that, his college career ended not with a buzzer-beater, but with a benching.

But that did not stop the NBA from noticing his potential. Jason Williams was drafted in 1st round in 1998 and was the 7th overall pick. His college journey may have been chaotic, but it was also unforgettable. In 2008, during his time with the Orlando Magic, Williams announced his retirement due to persistent injuries. But in 2009, he decided to return. That stint continued until April 18, 2011, when Williams finally hung up his jersey.
