What Happened to Bill Self? Kansas Confirms Heart Procedure After “Concerning Symptoms”

Kansas Jayhawks men’s college basketball coach Bill Self was hospitalized on Thursday with concerning heart symptoms at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. There, he underwent a procedure in which he had two stents inserted. He’s expected to make a full recovery relatively soon.

The University of Kansas released the following statement regarding Self’s condition:

“Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self felt unwell and experienced some concerning symptoms Thursday,” said the statement “He was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he had two stents inserted. The procedure went very well, and he is expected to make a full recovery. He is in good spirits and expects to be released from the hospital soon.”

The 62-year-old has been in charge of the Jayhawks for 23 seasons. During that period, he has led them to two NCAA tournament wins (2008 and 2022) and eight Big 12 championship titles (2006–2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2022). His record with the school is an impressive 609-148.

This is not the first health-related issue for him, and in 2023, he missed the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments due to a health scare. The Jayhawks open up preseason against Louisville on October 24, and right now, it’s unknown if Bill Self will be on the sidelines to coach them.
