Baylor Guard VJ Edgecombe Draws Jrue Holiday Comparison Ahead of 2025 NBA Draft

As the 2025 NBA Draft draws closer, NBA lottery teams are beginning to prepare their lists and fill out their boards with potential targets based on team needs or availability.

With Cooper Flagg essentially locked in at number one to Dallas, and Harper most likely heading to San Antonio at two, the jury is still out on the third to fifth picks, as one of Ace Bailey, VJ Edgecombe, or Tre Johnson could land anywhere. Edgecombe, a consensus five-star recruit out of Long Island Lutheran, played shooting guard for Baylor.

VJ Edgecombe Draws Comparison to 2x NBA Champion

Following the NBA Draft prospect’s measurements at the combine, comparisons with active and former NBA players started flying around, and the Baylor guard has been compared to Boston Celtics combo guard Jrue Holiday, who is a two-time NBA champion (2021, 2024).

While Edgecombe’s playing style is quite different from Holiday’s (more similar to Russell Westbrook), he did record similar physicals to what Holiday recorded at the 2009 combine.

Edgecombe belongs to the category of freshmen who only need one year to make their mark on college programs. He averaged 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game, adding 2.1 steals and 0.6 blocks on the defensive end.

He helped lead Baylor to the round of 32, scoring 30 points in his two NCAA Tournament games before they lost to a Cooper Flagg-led Duke. He has elite speed with a special vertical and burst.

Edgecombe struggled in his first month of college basketball, averaging 11.7 points per game on 40% shooting from the field, but he flipped the switch after he dropped 30 points against Kansas. He would then go on to score 15 points or more in eight of his last 14 games and propel himself into top-five conversations.

Summarily, Edgecombe is an explosive, high-motor wing who flies out of nowhere for poster dunks and chase-down blocks. He pairs his elite athleticism with a knockdown spot-up jumper, although he needs to improve his shot creation to become more of a primary creator.
