“People Better Get Us Now Because UConn’s Coming”: When Dan Hurley’s Warning Ended Up In Back-To-Back National Championships

UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley once issued a warning to their opponents before winning consecutive national titles. Last year, Bleacher Report‘s X handle shared coach Hurley’s bold statement from 2020 after the Huskies missed out on the NCAA tournament for the third straight time.

Hurley was appointed as UConn’s head coach for men’s college basketball in 2018 after he had spent the previous six years at the helm of the Rhode Island Rams’ coaching staff. Hurley had replaced Kevin Ollie at UConn.

“People better get us now…Because [UConn’s] coming,” @BleacherReport posted on X.

After Hurley’s words in 2020, his UConn team started ascending to the top of college basketball. In 2023, Hurley won his first-ever national championship with the Huskies, as they defeated the San Diego State Aztecs by 17 points, 76-59, in that year’s NCAA title game. Hurley and company followed it up with another national title win in 2024, this time through a 15-point win over the Purdue Boilermakers, 75-60.

However, their national championship three-peat hopes were foiled by the 2025 national champions, the Florida Gators, in the second round of this year’s NCAA tournament with a 77-75 defeat. Hurley and the Huskies finished the 2024-25 season with an overall record of 24-11 (14-6, Big East).

When Dan Hurley spoke about the mindset of European football managers he tries to emulate

In Nov. 2024, an article by Jeff Borzello of ESPN highlighted how Dan Hurley is not satisfied with two national championships and is looking to win more. This is something that resonates with his players, who were all interviewed in the said report. In one instance, though, Hurley spoke about the mindset of some European football managers that has inspired him to never be satisfied with the wins he earns.

“The way he was described in the book, it f**king landed on me. A pathological pursuit of excellence. He’s addicted to winning, winning and then continuing to win and then winning more. A serial winner. A serial winner. An obsession with every detail being right, relentless competitiveness,” Hurley was quoted as saying.

Some of the managers’ names Dan Hurley mentioned were Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp, and Carlo Ancelotti. Hurley reportedly likes to read coaching and mentality books during the offseason, which is presumably to prepare for the 2025-26 season.
