The UConn Huskies are about to navigate foreign waters. As the two-time defending national champions, coach Dan Hurley’s squad has mostly avoided the transfer portal. That will all change now that the teams’ 13-game NCAA Tournament winning streak has come to an end.
Hurley recently told “60 Minutes” that, “50% of my roster or more is at least considering going in the portal, if not already knows what school they’re going to.”

Players Leaving UConn (Transfer Portal)
Isaiah Abraham (Forward, Freshman)
The 6’7″ forward from Gainesville, Virginia, was the first Husky to enter the portal on March 27, 2025. Abraham appeared in nine games during the 2024-25 season, averaging 1.6 points per game and shooting 3 of 7 from three-point range, with a career-high six points against Maryland-Eastern Shore on November 30, 2024.
The former top 100 recruit (No. 78 in the Class of 2024 per 247Sports) committed to Georgetown shortly after entering the portal, as confirmed by On3 on March 30, 2025.
Aidan Mahaney (Guard, Junior)
Mahaney, a 6’3″ guard who transferred to UConn from Saint Mary’s before the 2024-25 season has entered the portal according to On3’s Joe Tipton. He averaged 4.5 points per game in his lone season with the Huskies in a reserve role.
Ahmad Nowell (Guard, Freshman)
The 6’1″ guard entered the transfer portal, per On3’s Pete Nakos, after playing in 18 games as a freshman. Nowell averaged 1.5 points per game, primarily in a limited bench role. The four-star recruit from the Class of 2024 hasn’t announced his destination yet, creating another backcourt vacancy for the Huskies.
Youssouf Singare (Center, Sophomore)
Youssouf Singare is a 6’10” center from Mali who played two seasons at UConn, winning a national championship in 2023-24. With limited playing time and 0.3 PPG and 0.7 RPG in 39 games, he entered the transfer portal on March 31, 2025. Previously at Our Saviour Lutheran and Falcons OTE, he was known for his defensive skills.
Players Joining UConn (Transfer Portal)
Silas Demary Jr. (Guard, Sophomore)
Demary,a 6’5″ guard from Georgi,a has committed to UConn after entering the portal following Georgia’s NCAA Tournament exit. He averaged 9.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game for the Bulldogs in the 2024-25 season while starting 36 of 37 games. His defensive versatility and rim-attacking ability make him a critical addition to UConn’s backcourt.
Malachi Smith (Guard, Graduate Student)
Malachi Smith, a 6’0″ point guard from the Bronx, officially joined UConn on April 14, 2025, as a Dayton graduate transfer with one year of eligibility remaining. In 86 games (77 starts) at Dayton, he averaged 9.3 points, 5.3 assists, and 3.3 rebounds while shooting 38.8% from three. His 2024-25 season featured career highs of 10.4 points and 5.3 assists per game.
Players Leaving UConn (Non-Transfer Portal)
Hassan Diarra (Guard, Senior)
Diarra graduated after the 2024-25 season, concluding his career as the team captain. Averaging 5.7 assists per game while leading UConn’s offense, his departure leaves a significant void at point guard that Demary will likely help fill.
Samson Johnson (Center, Senior)
Johnson exhausted his eligibility after the 2024-25 season. As a starting big man, his graduation opens a frontcourt spot that may be filled by Tarris Reed Jr., assuming Reed doesn’t explore draft options himself.
Alex Karaban (Forward, Redshirt Junior)
Karaban is expected to enter the 2025 NBA Draft, according to multiple reports. The versatile forward’s potential departure would remove a key scorer and defender from UConn’s frontcourt, creating a significant gap in their lineup.

Incoming Players Other Than Transfer Portal
UConn’s incoming 2025 freshman class ranked top 5 nationally features McDonald’s All-Americans Darius Adams (shooting guard), Braylon Mullins (shooting guard), Eric Reibe (center) and Australian guard Jacob Furphy. This elite recruiting class helps reduce reliance on additional transfers but doesn’t fully offset veteran departures.
With the transfer portal closing on April 22, 2025, Hurley faces a tight window to finalize moves. The Huskies will likely target 1-2 more transfers, particularly a point guard and big man to maintain their national championship contention status despite losing up to six key contributors.
