Tre Donaldson Transfer Portal: Top Landing Spots for the Michigan Guard

Michigan basketball secured the services of point guard Elliot Cadeau from North Carolina but lost their starting PG, Tre Donaldson, to the transfer portal the next day. It seems Donaldson isn’t willing to share his minutes or spotlight with the new recruit.

Donaldson was Michigan’s starting point guard as a junior. He started all 37 games for the Wolverines and averaged career-highs in points, rebounds, and assists. He averaged 11.3 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game for Michigan.

5 Potential Landing Spots for Tre Donaldson.

    North Carolina Tar Heels

The Tar Heels’ Star shooting guard RJ Davis is out of eligibility, and point guard Elliot Cadeau has transferred to Michigan. They could look towards Donaldson to fill in these gaps. Donaldson and Cadeau are stylistically similar so the transition should be seamless.

Donaldson already averages more points and rebounds than Cadeau, so UNC doesn’t have to worry about getting the inferior player. Donaldson also shoots better than Cadeau from beyond the arc.

    Kentucky Wildcats

Kentucky is a guard-heavy squad, as the Wildcats’ top four scorers in the 24/25 season were guards. They have since lost three of them as they have exhausted their eligibility. Donaldson could provide adequate depth for the squad.

Koby Brea, Lamont Butler, and Jason Robinson will not be around for next season, leaving Donaldson with an open starting spot.

    St. John’s Red Storm

The Red Storm lost four guards from the 24/25 season, and legendary head coach Rick Pitino will look to the transfer portal to replace them. RJ Luis Jr. entered the transfer portal, while Kadary Richmond, Aaron Scott, and Deivon Smith are all out of eligibility.

Pitino will be looking to recruit multiple guards, and Donaldson’s defensive abilities should give him an edge.

    Michigan State Spartans

If Donaldson wishes to stay, Michigan State is an option. The Spartans lost Tre Holloman, Xavier Booker, and Gehrig Normand to the portal. It is also very likely that Jase Richardson will turn pro this year.

Head coach, Tom Izzo has his work cut out and he will also be looking to the transfer portal to replace the exits. He doesn’t have to look to far from home before seeing Donaldson though.

    Florida State Seminoles

Florida State will start next season with a new head coach, Luke Loucks, replacing long-time head coach Leonard Hamilton. A sizeable number of their roster also entered the transfer portal, and Loucks will be looking to the portal for recruits.

FSU could be a good landing spot for Donaldson, a Florida native.
