Transfer Portal Chaos at Indiana: Hoosiers Lose Entire 2024-25 Roster

Darian Devries arrived at Indiana as the new coach to an empty locker room. The Indiana Hoosiers do not have a single player from the 24/25 season returning, which is quite surprising.

The Hoosiers had a very disappointing season, which led to a coaching change. Now, the entire roster has left, with Bryson Tucker and Myles Rice entering the portal on Friday.

Of the 2024/25 season’s players, four graduated (Trey Galloway, Anthony Leal, Luke Goode, and Oumar Bello), and six entered the transfer portal, led by forward Mackenzie Mgbako. The new head coach has his work cut out as he starts to rebuild the team from scratch.

    What Happened to Indiana?

Disaster did not befall Indiana, and they were not sanctioned. The Hoosiers found themselves in this situation due to below-par performances across the entire roster. Nearly every player performed below expectations, and there wasn’t a standout player worthy of high praise in the 24/25 season.

Myles Rice averaged 10.1 points per game, which looked decent, but a deeper dive into his game-by-game statistics highlights inefficiency. He scored 10 points or more in 18 games, but he also had 5 points or less in 12 games.

Mackenzie Mgbako, who headlined the exodus, is known for his scoring abilities, but He never had a stretch longer than five games where he reached double digits in scoring.

Many other players on the roster had too many ups and downs. When you’re constantly in doubt about which side of your roster will turn up each game, you will end up in a situation like this.

What Is Devries Bringing to Indiana?

Having been appointed head coach, Darian Devries will bring to Indiana first his identity, something the Hoosiers have been lacking for a while. Devries spent his early days in Indiana analyzing what was left of his locker room and even spoke to some graduates.

Devries has already committed four-star Montverde Academy forward Trent Sisley to the team next season. He is also bringing his son, Tucker, to Indiana.

Devries teams are known for their toughness and early offense,e although they rarely force shots option for smart build-up instead. He likes his teams relying on a point guard to run the offense, so it can be inferred that he’ll look to recruit around these traits. The transfer portal that depleted his roster could also serve him with new quality for the incoming season.
