“Transfer, So I Can Make Money”: John Calipari Takes Another Jab At NCAA With Outburst About Transfer Portal

Arkansas head coach John Calipari isn’t the biggest fan of the recent developments in college basketball so far. Earlier, Calipari went on a tirade about how NIL was allowing older players to overstay their duration in college just to bag the huge sums of money from endorsement contracts. And recently, he explained his distaste towards the NCAA’s rules on the transfer portal.

NCAA basketball transfer rules allow for immediate eligibility on a one-time basis for most players due to the ‘One-Time Transfer Rule.’ But now, there are specific transfer windows, such as 60 days for winter sports like basketball that allow players to enter the Transfer Portal while also allowing exceptions for graduate students and players whose coach leaves.

While unlimited transfers are now possible, subsequent transfers often require sitting out a year, though graduating players are immediately eligible. Players must remain academically eligible and follow proper notification procedures to use these rules effectively.

In an Instagram post shared by @cbbonfox, Calipari explained how this leaves coaches at a disadvantage by giving the instance of a player who refuses to implement his advice to run faster or be tougher on the court. Calipari said the player gets “sad” whenever he asks them to play a certain way on the floor. He explained how this could highlight a lack of professionalism on the floor and how transfers could be an easy way for such players to exit a situation like that.

“With these kids what they’re going through, the social media stuff. People in the ear ‘Transfer, transfer, transfer so I can make money,’ Okay? That always won’t work out. All of a sudden, these kids have the weight of the world. Well, That’s our job to deal with that and help them walk through that,” Calipari said.

A week earlier, Calipari went on an outburst about the NIL allowing older players to overstay their duration playing in the collegiate level. He used the instance of a player who is bagging NIL money to pay off his ‘divorce alumni.’ Well, Calipari isn’t wrong here, as the average age of the starting line-up for a Sweet-16 team last season was 23.2, older than five NBA teams.

In a way, he is trying to encourage the young generation to focus on hoops more than the money that is coming. Probably, that is one of the reasons why Calipari has been able to field a Razorbacks team which is one of the youngest in the SEC.

Donald Trump Criticizes The NIL System And Calls It A ‘Disaster’

US President Donald Trump became the most recent critic of NILs in college sports, labeling the system as a “disaster”. During an interaction with the media at the White House on Friday, President Trump said,

“I don’t like the NIL. The NIL is a disaster for college sports. I think it’s a disaster for the Olympics…You can’t pay a quarterback $14 million to come out of high school. They don’t even know he’s going to be a very good player!”

President Trump argued how some of the top institutions in the country were suffering financially and how it wouldn’t be viable for colleges to continue to “play this game” if such a structure was in place. He also warned about the consequences extending beyond football and basketball, saying how Olympic sports are now being threatened since everyone was was “putting all their money into football.”

The President suggested that Washington might need to step in to mitigate such a disaster. He said that the federal government is working behind fixing this issue and if not done soon, it could “wipe out colleges.”
