NBA star Trae Young has been named assistant general manager at his alma mater, the University of Oklahoma. The move makes Young just the second active NBA player to take on such a role, following Stephen Curry’s appointment at Davidson earlier this year.
Young spent one season with the Sooners, becoming the first player in NCAA Division I history to lead the nation in both points per game (27.4) and assists per game (8.7). The school announced Monday that Young has pledged to donate $1 million to the program.

Meet Shelby Miller, the Woman Behind Atlanta’s Star Point Guard
Young met his wife, Shelby Miller, while attending the University of Oklahoma. He was a standout on the basketball team, while Miller was a member of the cheerleading squad. They made their relationship public on Instagram in October 2017.
After four years of dating, the couple announced their engagement in 2021 and married in the Bahamas in 2023. While Miller’s profession has not been publicly disclosed, she is presumed to be a stay-at-home mother and a strong supporter of Young’s career.
The couple welcomed their first child, Tydus Reign Young, in June 2022 and their second child in November 2023.
Trae Young’s Rising NBA Career
During his lone season at Oklahoma, Young earned consensus first-team All-America honors in 2018. He also led the nation in scoring and assists, won the Wayman Tisdale Award, and was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year.
Young was selected fifth overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2018 NBA Draft but was traded the same day to the Atlanta Hawks for Luka Dončić and a future first-round pick.
Since then, Young has been named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team (2019) and has made four All-Star appearances. He helped lead the Hawks to the Eastern Conference finals in the 2020-21 season, where they fell to the Milwaukee Bucks.
