It seems as though Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis has made his future intentions with his current team crystal clear. On Monday, Jan. 5, @hooper on Instagram published a post that quotes Davis from a recent report written by basketball writer Ron Harrod Jr. In it, Davis briefly discusses potentially teaming up with 2016 NBA champion Kyrie Irving when he returns.
According to Davis, Irving can turn the trajectory of the 2025-26 Mavericks campaign in their favor. Davis was traded to the Dallas-based franchise last year in February as part of what many consider the biggest NBA deal of all time, which also featured now Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic. Since then, though, Davis has played alongside Irving only once.
“He’s a hell of a player, a Hall of Famer. He changes the dynamic of our team. When he gets back, we will be an even better team,” Davis was quoted as saying.
“Anthony Davis spoke highly of Kyrie and explained what is bound to happen when he returns 🫡🗞️ Ron Harrod Jr.,” @hooper on Instagram captioned with an emoji.

Davis’ statement comes after another report by @hooper on Instagram indicates that the 2020 NBA champion actually prefers to stay put in Dallas, and hopefully gets a contract extension. This comes after reports earlier in the 2025-26 NBA season allude to the narrative that coach Jason Kidd’s Mavericks may opt to trade Davis and move the team in a different direction.
“Anthony Davis prefers to stay put in Dallas and get a contract extension from them in the summer,” @hooper on Instagram wrote.

As it stands, Davis and the 2025-26 Mavericks have uncorked an overall record of 13-23, and are the 11th seed in the Western Conference. The team recently broke its four-game losing streak by defeating coach Ime Udoka’s Houston Rockets on Saturday, Jan. 3, by six points, 110-104. Dallas looks to carry that momentum into their next matchup, the Sacramento Kings, on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Kyrie Irving Is Expected To Return Sometime In The 2025-26 NBA Campaign
For now, Anthony Davis’ intentions to seek a pairing between him and Kyrie Irving continue to remain as something the big man can look forward to, as there is currently no concrete timeline for Irving to return.
However, as several reports have suggested, the spitfire scorer is expected to return at some point in the 2025-26 NBA campaign. Irving has been out since March of last year as he is dealing with a torn ACL.
