Wisconsin basketball just landed a major piece for the upcoming season. Nick Boyd, a standout guard from San Diego State, has committed to head coach Greg Gard. Ranked among the top 50 transfers in the portal, Boyd is expected to bring a certain set of skills and years of experience.

Badgers Score Big as Nick Boyd Commits to Wisconsin
Boyd, a 6’3″ senior from Garnerville, New York, chose Wisconsin over heavy hitters like North Carolina. He’s no stranger to high-level play, having spent three seasons at Florida Atlantic before transferring to San Diego State for 2024-25.

Last year, he put up 13.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. That performance earned him All-Mountain West Second Team honors. Boyd’s shooting stands out. He’s hit 37% of his three-pointers across 481 career attempts.
That kind of consistency from deep makes him one of the portal’s top marksmen. With 119 games played and 82 starts, he is one of the most experienced guards Badgers could have hoped for. Wisconsin needed this kind of veteran presence after losing six seniors to graduation.
Gard has been clear about what he wants in players. Boyd fits the mold set up by him perfectly. He can run the point or shift to the wing. He creates his own shots and sets up teammates with ease.
Many think of him as a blend of last year’s John Blackwell and John Tonje. His 2.2 assist-to-turnover ratio last season shows his decision-making under pressure.
Experience was a priority for Gard. Boyd delivers that in spades. He’s been part of two NCAA Tournament teams at FAU, including a Final Four run. Now, in his final year of eligibility, he’s ready to help Wisconsin push deeper into March.
This isn’t just a one-off pickup. Boyd joins a solid transfer class with Austin Rapp and Andrew Rohde already on board. He’s the third portal addition this offseason, ranked No. 49 overall by 247Sports and No. 26 by Evan Miya.

Two 2025 recruits, Zach Kinziger and Will Garlock, will also bolster the roster. Gard’s not done yet, but this group already looks formidable.
The Badgers are in transition. They’re waiting on sophomore John Blackwell’s NBA Draft decision, which could shake things up further. Either way, Boyd’s arrival strengthens their backcourt depth. He averaged nearly 30 minutes a game last season at SDSU. Expect him to log a similar time in Madison.
