Ranking the Top 10 Winningest College Basketball Coaches of All-Time

The NCAA and similar organizations have produced a lot of legendary coaches, but the question is, who among them has the most wins? Who is the winningest college basketball coach of all time?

This list will look at which college coaches have the most wins and not the most awards or NCAA national or conference championships. The list will also include a few coaches who did not coach at the Division I level but still have plenty of wins under their belt. Without further ado, here they are:

The Top 10 Winningest College Coaches Ever

10 – Jim Calhoun – Northeastern, UConn, St. Joseph

When it comes to college basketball coaching legends, Jim Calhoun is up there, especially with his legendary run as the head coach of the UConn Huskies. He had 920 wins and 397 losses, with a .697 winning percentage as a head coach.

9 – Don Meyer – Hamline, Lipscomb, Northern State

Don Meyer may not have entirely coached NCAA member schools in his 38-year career, but he held the title of most wins by a men’s basketball coach for years, until Mike Krzyzewski surpassed him in 2011. He had 923 wins and 324 losses with a .740 winning percentage.

8 – Bob Huggins – Walsh, Akron, Cincinnati. Kansas State, West Virginia

“Huggy Bear” is considered one of the greatest college coaches of all time. While he has never won the NCAA title, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022. He had 935 wins and 415 losses, with a .692 winning percentage.

    7 – Glenn R. Robinson – Franklin & Marshall

One of the few coaches in the list who has stayed in just one school, Robinson only coached in the NCAA’s Division III, though he has failed to win the national title there. He is 967–359 overall with a .729 winning percentage.

    6 – Jim Boeheim – Syracuse

Another rare one-school coach, Boeheim led the Orange to its first and so far only national title in 2003, with the help of Carmelo Anthony. He has a 1,015-441 overall record, with a .697 winning percentage.

    5 – Danny Miles – Oregon Tech

Miles only coached at Oregon Tech, but he led the Hustlin’ Owls to three NAIA Division II National Championships. He was 1,040–437 overall and has a .704 winning percentage.

4 – Dave Holmquist – Fresno Pacific, Biola

Dave Holmquist is the only active coach in this list, which means he could still move up the list. He had coached Biola when the school transitioned from NAIA to NCAA Division II in 2016. He is 1,058-447 and has a .707 winning percentage.

    3 – Harry Statham – McKendree

Starting out as a high school coach, Harry Statham is the third-winningest college coach of all time, and he never coached in the NCAA, with much of his career happening in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). He has a 1,122–513 overall record, with a .686 winning percentage.

    2 – Herb McGee, Jefferson

The “Shot Doctor” coached in only one school and stayed there through three naming changes. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame after a career which gave him a 1,144–450 overall record, with a .718 winning percentage.

    1 – Mike Krzyzewski – Army, Duke

Mike Krzyzewski, AKA Coach K, is not only the winningest coach in college basketball, with a 1,202–368 record and a .766 win percentage. He also led USA Basketball to two World Cups and three Olympic gold medals, as well as being a Hall of Famer. Jon Scheyer has some pretty big shoes to fill at Durham.
