Miami Heat star Terry Rozier was arrested on Thursday morning over gambling allegations. The guard has been taken to custody in Orlando, Florida, after Heat’s season opener, where he didn’t play because of an hamstring injury.
The authorities including FBI and the US Attorney’s office are looking into illegal sport-betting activity. According to ABC News, Rozier is one of six individuals charged for giving inside information to profit from illegal betting.
FBI Director Kash Patel will reveal the charges placed against Rozier in Thursday’s press conference in New York City.
What’s The Root Cause Behind Allegations Against Terry Rozier?
On March 23, 2023, when Rozier was playing for the Charlotte Hornets, authorities noted several betting patterns aligned to the guard’s individual statistics, like points, rebounds and assists.
According to ESPN, sportsbooks also found unusual betting patterns, with 30 seperate betting wagers being placed inside 46 minutes totaling around $13,759. In that game, Rozier played only 10 minutes before being sidelined due to foot injury. The NBA has also looked into the matter but found no violation of any league rules.
Terry Rozier Previously Denied to Speak Anything on The Matter
The federal probe against Terry Rozier started earlier this year in January. At the time, during a press conference Rozier declined to answer questions about the investigation.
“On advice from counsel, I can’t answer any questions about that matter,” Rozier said via ESPN. “So, I won’t.”
Despite the gambling allegation, Rozier said that he was in a “great headspace” and that his focus remains on playing basketball.
“It’s kind of always been easy. It’s kind of been my life,” Rozier said. “You know, once I get in between them lines, I can block out anything. So, it’ll be pretty easy for me. I’m around a great group of guys. We’ve got a great locker room, great staff, so it’s easy for me.”
The NBA has been strict when it comes to hurting the integrity of the league with regards to betting. Last year, former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter was banned for life after he bet against his own team to lose while sharing confidential information to bettors.
