Indiana has landed one of the top guards in the 2025 transfer portal in Tayton Conerway, a 6’3″ standout from Burleson, Texas.
Conerway’s journey to high-major basketball included stops at Grayson College and Ranger College, where he was named the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Men’s Player of the Year and earned NJCAA Division I first-team All-American honors.

Indiana Basketball’s Backcourt Gets a Boost with Tayton Conerway
The guard transferred to Troy, where he helped capture the Sun Belt title and an NCAA tournament berth. He was 11th in the league in scoring, led the conference in steals, and ranked third in assists. He now joins Indiana’s 2025–26 backcourt alongside Conor Enright as one of the program’s point guards heading into next season.
Conerway arrives in Bloomington with a proven track record and a reputation as one of the nation’s premier defensive guards. The transfer from Troy averaged 14.2 points, 4.8 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.9 steals per game last season, anchoring a conference championship team and setting a Troy single-season record with 98 steals.

Conerway shot 47.1% from the field, with 62% of his attempts coming at the rim, where he consistently finished through contact. While he hit just 27% of his threes on 4.0 attempts per game, his offensive value lies more in his ability to break down defenses and facilitate.
His 36.8% assist rate ranked 20th nationally, and he maintained a solid 1.75 assist-to-turnover ratio despite averaging 2.7 turnovers per game.
Defensively, Conerway ranked third in the nation in steal percentage at 5.6%, a testament to his anticipation, quick hands, and commitment on that end. His ability to disrupt passing lanes and hound ball handlers aligns perfectly with head coach Darian DeVries’ high-pressure defensive philosophy.
Beyond the stats, Conerway brings versatility and maturity to Indiana’s backcourt. He’s capable of playing either guard spot and thrives in transition. He’s known for his aggressive drives, particularly off-ball screens, where he frequently draws contact and makes plays for others.
Despite not being a volume shooter from deep, he consistently creates scoring opportunities for teammates.
Before his arrival in the Big Ten, Conerway’s career began under the radar at Burleson Centennial (Texas) and went through JUCO to the Sun Belt, which points to his insatiable will to win.
