Tahaad Pettiford Tipped to Beat Boogie Fland and Xaivian Lee to Top SEC Crown After NBA Draft Withdrawal

Tahaad Pettiford’s decision to withdraw from the NBA Draft and return to Auburn has sent shockwaves through the SEC. It instantly elevated the Tigers’ championship prospects and placed Pettiford as a frontrunner for the league’s top individual honors.

His return comes at a time when the conference is brimming with elite guard talent, including Florida’s Boogie Fland and Xaivian Lee, but analysts and peers alike believe Pettiford could emerge as the SEC’s best.

Tahaad Pettiford’s Return Reshapes the SEC Race

Pettiford’s freshman campaign was marked by clutch performances and remarkable efficiency despite coming off the bench for most of the season. As Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl put it, “There aren’t 25 freshmen in college this year who are better than Tahaad Pettiford.”

Pettiford’s ability to shine in high-pressure moments was on full display during the NCAA Tournament, where he “poured in 23 points in the team’s second-round win over Creighton and then followed that up with 20 points in a Sweet 16 victory over Michigan”.

His peers took notice as well; in a poll of NBA draft prospects, Pettiford was voted the most underrated player in the draft class.

With Auburn’s roster undergoing significant turnover, Pettiford is expected to take on a starring role. “Pettiford’s return is vital, as he is the only remaining player from Auburn’s Final Four team. Although he played a bench role last season, he is expected to transition smoothly into the starting point guard position”.

This expanded responsibility, combined with his proven ability to deliver when it matters most, sets the stage for a breakout sophomore year.

The Challenge from Fland and Lee

The SEC’s guard landscape is as competitive as ever, with Boogie Fland and Xaivian Lee both joining Florida’s backcourt after standout seasons elsewhere.

Fland, a transfer from Arkansas, “averaged over 13 points and five assists per game in an injury-shortened first college season” and is expected to “revamp the Gators’ backcourt to form perhaps the most talented starting lineup in the country in 2025–26”.

Meanwhile, Lee arrives from Princeton, bringing “exceptional scoring and playmaking skills” and is projected to be one of college basketball’s highest NIL earners.

Despite the formidable competition, Pettiford’s unique blend of explosiveness and poise sets him apart. Auburn teammate Johni Broome described him as “very explosive, he makes the right plays. He’s young, but he can definitely grow into a very good young player.”

Pettiford himself is embracing the challenge, stating, “Going back to Auburn is a better situation for me. I see myself being a higher pick next year. It wasn’t 100% this year, so I didn’t want to take that chance”.

The upcoming SEC season promises to be a showcase of elite guard play, but Pettiford’s proven record in big games and his elevated role at Auburn have many tipping him to outshine both Fland and Lee in the race for the conference crown.
