    Sheriff’s Office Confirms Breakthrough in CBB Star Jamarion Brown’s Tragic Shooting in Texas

    A tragic shooting at a Texas pool party has claimed the life of Henderson State University basketball player Jamarion Brown, leaving the sports community in mourning.

    The 21-year-old junior guard was fatally wounded in the head during the incident, which also injured two others. A suspect has since been taken into custody in connection with the killing.

    Investigation Continues Into Shooting of Jamarion Brown; 17-Year-Old Suspect Arrested

    Authorities in Camp County responded to multiple emergency calls on Friday evening reporting gunfire at a social gathering in eastern Texas.

    Upon arrival, deputies discovered Brown critically injured from a gunshot wound to the head. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was first transported to a nearby hospital before being airlifted to a medical facility in Tyler, where he later succumbed to his injuries.


    Two additional victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries. One was shot in the leg and the other in the hip.

    Authorities confirmed that Onterrian Jamour Newton, a 17-year-old from Mount Pleasant, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with murder in connection to Brown’s death. Additional charges are expected. The Texas Rangers are assisting in the ongoing investigation.

    Community and University Mourn the Loss

    Jamarion Brown, a Mount Pleasant native and former standout at Mount Pleasant High School, was a junior guard at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He joined the Reddies men’s basketball team ahead of the 2024–25 season.

    “It is with deep sadness that Henderson State Athletics mourns the death of junior men’s basketball student-athlete Jamarion Brown,” the university said in an official statement. “‘Jo’ spent just one season in Arkadelphia, but his impact on our campus was profound.”

    Henderson State head coach Jimmy Elgas also paid tribute to Brown. “No words can express our sadness for Jamarion’s family, friends, and teammates,” Elgas said. Jo’s impact was felt not only on the basketball court, but throughout the fabric of Henderson State University, and we all grieve together. His loss leaves a tremendous void on our campus, but Jo will be remembered and honored in our hearts forever.”

    Brown played in 30 games during the 2024–25 season, averaging 6.5 points per game. Known for his intensity on defense, he earned Great American Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors in February. That same month, he posted a 14-point performance against Arkansas-Monticello.
