Kings’ Assistant Coach Jim Moran Joins Florida State Seminoles Staff

Former Sacramento assistant coach Jim Moran is now on the staff of the Florida State men’s team, having been hired as associate head coach/offensive coordinator by the Seminoles’ new head coach, Luke Loucks.

CBS Sports reporter Jon Rothstein broke the news on his X account.

Jim Moran has had a significant coaching career in the NBA and the NBA G League. According to On3, he worked for several organizations for 10 years before joining the Seminoles.

    • 2014-2015: Portland Trail Blazers (associate video)
    • 2015-2021: Portland Trail Blazers (assistant coach)
    • 2021-2023: Detroit Pistons (assistant coach)
    • 2023-2024: Rip City Remix (head coach)
    • 2024-2025: Sacramento Kings (assistant coach)

Prior to that, Moran had a playing career that saw him play four seasons for William & Mary. He then played professionally in Spain’s ACB League, representing CB Gran Canaria for his entire career.

His time in Spanish basketball included 10 seasons from 2001 to 2011, with 2,060 points, 802 rebounds, and 321 assists in 7,452 minutes. With the Canarian club, he won five Toyota Cups, and his number (20) was the first to be retired in the organization’s history.

The Seminoles received Moran after finishing 11th in the ACC last season, going 8-11 in conference play and 17-15 overall. The team has not won the conference regular season since 2020 and has not played for the NCAA title since 1972, when they finished as the runner-up.

Luke Loucks joined the team last March to replace longtime coach Leonard Hamilton, who led the Seminoles for 23 seasons. Loucks, who played for Florida State during his college basketball days, also had an extensive playing and coaching career before returning to his alma mater.

As a player, he was a member of several clubs in Europe and the NBA G League between 2012 and 2016. He then began his coaching career, working for the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings before accepting the position with the Seminoles.
