Ryan Conwell Transfer Portal: Top 5 Landing Spots for the Xavier Guard

Xavier guard Ryan Conwell has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal after a standout season with the Musketeers. Conwell was Xavier’s second-leading scorer behind Zach Freemantle (16.8 PPG) and played a pivotal role in the team’s offense.

His decision to transfer comes just days after Xavier’s NCAA Tournament exit and reports that head coach Sean Miller is heading to Texas. With his scoring ability and experience, Conwell is expected to draw interest from top programs seeking a dynamic guard.

Top 5 Transfer Landing Spots for Ryan Conwell

Conwell has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal following a strong season with the Musketeers.

In his lone year with Xavier, Conwell averaged 16.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 45.0% from the field and 41.2% from beyond the arc. The 6-foot-4 guard also contributed 11.5 points per game in Xavier’s two NCAA Tournament appearances.

A former three-star prospect from Pike High School (Indiana), Conwell was ranked No. 303 overall and No. 36 among combo guards in the 2022 recruiting class, per the On3 Industry Ranking. His senior year saw him put up 22.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 3.0 steals per game, earning him Marion County Player of the Year honors.

With several high-major programs in need of a reliable scorer, here are five potential landing spots for Conwell:

    St. John’s Red Storm

With Richard Pitino now at the helm, St. John’s is prioritizing experienced transfer players over high school recruits. If leading scorer RJ Luis Jr. enters the NBA Draft, Conwell would be a key addition to their backcourt.

    Texas Longhorns

Newly appointed Texas head coach Sean Miller, who coached Conwell at Xavier, could pursue a reunion in Austin. Conwell thrived under Miller’s system and spoke highly of his experience:

“I would say my first year at Xavier, it’s all a blessing, just the opportunity that was given to me….To play with a great of group guys for a great coaching staff… it was just all a blessing. I enjoyed it. I feel like I grew a lot as a basketball player but also just as a young man. I’m just excited for what’s to come.”

    NC State Wolfpack

The Wolfpack showed interest in Conwell during his previous transfer process and could target him again to bolster their perimeter shooting. With Will Wade looking to send a “reckoning” to Triangle Hoops, Conwell could be a key piece for the Wolfpack.

    Indiana Hoosiers

As an Indianapolis native, Conwell has deep ties to Indiana. The Hoosiers previously showed interest in him, and returning to his home state could be appealing.

    Purdue Boilermakers

Purdue will likely lose Braden Smith or Fletcher Loyer, meaning they’ll need another guard to maintain their perimeter production.

Conwell’s 85.5% free-throw shooting and consistent scoring make him a potential asset in the Boilermakers’ backcourt.
