Russell Westbrook, DeMar DeRozan And More Face Peril As Sacramento Kings Reportedly Make Tough Decision

The Sacramento Kings are off to one of their worst starts this season. The Kings are 4-13 in the league, standing at the bottom of the Western Conference, despite signing some of the hottest players over the past two seasons. Jake Fischer from The Stein Line has reported that the Kings are looking to trade anyone on their roster, apart from Keegan Murray and Nique Clifford.

With this report, expect Domantas Sabonis, Russell Westbrook, Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Malik Monk, among others, to be available. While the idea of the Kings trading Sabonis, LaVine, and DeRozan has been circulating since the off-season, it could be challenging to move Sabonis and LaVine, as both are on large contracts. DeRozan could have more value at the deadline than he did before the start of the season.

Once again, the chatter about keeping Murray and Clifford may come as a surprise to many fans, but the two young guards may stand out as key building blocks for the team’s future. Both Murray and Clifford are wing players who fit the current standard within the league’s evolving landscape.

Furthermore, Westbrook was also a key addition earlier in the season. He is averaging 14.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists on 44.4% shooting from the field and 38.9% from deep. Although he has taken the starting guard spot over Dennis Schroder, the Kings know that Russ isn’t someone to bank on long-term due to his age.

This season might not be the one where the Kings move all their players. However, expect at least one big name to be traded before the deadline. The coming months could bring some changes to the Kings’ roster.

The Kings Could Trade for Jeremiah Fears from the Pelicans

Since the Sacramento Kings are already planning to shop around this season, one of the best bets for them could be picking rookie Jeremiah Fears from the Pelicans. New Orleans is also at the bottom rung of the Western Conference standings and finds itself in a similar position as the Kings.

Now, they are also tied to big contracts with players such as Zion Williamson, Jordan Poole, and Dejounte Murray. Unfortunately, it is unlikely for them to trade Williamson, despite his injury woes resulting in him missing 55% of his career games.

In the 2025 NBA Draft, the Pels picked Fears as a seventh overall pick. He is doing decent for a rookie, averaging 15.3 points, 2.8 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game. Also, he has been a menace to the opposition in defense, averaging 1.8 steals a game. But Fears is committing a lot of fouls and turnovers, which is a major concern going forward.

The Kings could put together a package including guards Dennis Schroder and Devin Carter alongside forward Dario Saric to seal this deal. Fears could pair well with Keon Ellis and Keegan Murray, as well as learn from the veteran leadership of Russell Westbrook. In a way, the Kings could secure a strong backcourt while rebuilding themselves to bounce back.
