The 2017–18 Villanova Wildcats, with Jalen Brunson leading the way, really made their mark in college basketball that year. Their season was all about dominance, discipline, and playing for each other.
Sure, the team was stacked with talent, but it was Brunson who set the pace—both with his stats and his leadership—making Jay Wright’s squad something special.

Jalen Brunson’s Leadership: The Heartbeat of Villanova’s Championship Run
Brunson’s junior campaign was nothing short of spectacular. He averaged 19.2 points, 4.6 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per game, shooting an impressive 52.7 percent from the field and 41.4 percent from three-point range.
His efficiency and poise under pressure were unmatched, as he guided Villanova to a 36–4 record and a national championship.
“Jalen had a remarkable season and not only achieved individual success, but also was the undisputed leader of this Villanova team that enjoyed so many remarkable moments,” Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club, said.
Brunson’s impact extended beyond the box score.
“He is a born scorer and leader – which is rare. Most guys are scorers and not leaders. Or they’re leaders who aren’t scorers. He is born to do (both),” Wright said, praising his unique blend of scoring and leadership.

Brunson himself credited the Villanova culture and his teammates for his growth.
“It’s a credit to my family, which has sacrificed a lot, and my teammates and coaches, who have helped me become the confident player I am,” Brunson said, “I’m really thankful that I get to do this with a group of guys I love. It’s all a credit to them.”
Brunson’s humility and accountability, paired with his relentless drive, made him the ideal leader for a team built on trust and execution.
During tough games, Brunson’s leadership became very clear. Whether it was a tight game or the NCAA Tournament, he always helped the team with what he did. His teammates improved because of him, and his calm demeanor played a major role in the team’s successful championship.
The Wildcats had the most efficient offense in the country, and a lot of that came down to Brunson’s smart choices and great vision on the court.
The Supporting Cast and the Villanova System
Brunson may have led the way, but Villanova’s victory came from its balanced approach and Wright’s smart designs. Mikal Bridges played superb two-way basketball, Donte DiVincenzo shined in the title game, while Omari Spellman, Eric Paschall, and Phil Booth made sure Villanova had plenty of players to rely on.
The team’s strong performances made it possible for Villanova to win every NCAA game with a wide lead, a rare thing today.
Wright’s approach fostered a culture of accountability and development, emphasizing experience and continuity over one-and-done stardom. This philosophy allowed players like Brunson to mature into leaders and for the team to operate as a cohesive unit.
“He wants to lead, and he wants to carry a team. He wants the responsibility. He’s such a rare individual. He’s the only player that really drove me more,” Wright reflected on Brunson’s drive.

Villanova’s 2017–18 campaign demonstrates how to continue being excellent in college basketball.
Brunson and his teammates’ ability to perform as superstars, play for others, and work together guided them to stand out from others. They were successful not only due to their strengths but also because their culture stressed teamwork, growth, and being strong.
Brunson supported the Wildcats in winning their championship with brilliant play and strong leadership. His success can be seen in his trophy collection, but mainly in the high standard and unity he brought to his players.
