Reddit Revives Classic Sports Copypasta to Cope With Duke’s Stunning Final Four Loss

Duke University’s men’s basketball team was one of the top teams everyone expected to win the NCAA tournament. However, as we know, the game is played on the court, not on paper.

As such, everyone was shocked to see Houston defeat Duke in the Final Four and progress to the final. As a coping mechanism for fans, Reddit revived classic sports copypasta!

    What’s the Copypasta Thread About?

The discussion thread poses the question, Should the NCAA have Duke and Houston redo their game in case it was a fluke? The post continues,

“No disrespect to Houston, but I’m a firm believer that Houston winning is a huge fluke and robs Duke of truly accomplishing what they are capable of. I’ve spent the last day in pure disbelief, and it just doesn’t make sense to me.”

“I’ve spent the entire regular season watching Duke be #1 in KenPom, and it’s just not fair. If Duke loses again, I will face that Houston deserved the win, but I am just 100% sure it was a fluke and does a big disservice to Duke and the NCAA.”

Copypasta was born in 2007 after the Chicago Blackhawks were severely defeated by the Nashville Predators. The signature copypasta features a format similar to the one posted after Duke’s NCAA defeat.

It begins with a (1) No disrespect to team x, (2) I’m a firm believer that this result is a huge fluke and robs team x of truly accomplishing what they are capable of.

Defeats sting and fans often look for ways to overcome the pain. Rather than dwell on the disappointments, copypasta has been one fun way many fans have overcome the pain of the loss.

The Reddit thread has gathered over 2000 votes with about 215 comments. While some fans are aware of the post’s humourous intent, many still treat the post as a genuine request for a rematch. Thus, the argument has continued to generate more engagement. Undoubtedly, many will come to learn about Copypasta through this thread.
