Purdue Find ‘Definite NBA Guy’ as Fans Attribute Win Over Alabama to One Star Player

Purdue Boilermakers freshman Omer Mayer is gaining more recognition in the basketball world. On Thursday, Nov. 13, Mayer and the rest of coach Matt Painter‘s Boilermakers clashed with coach Nate Oats’ Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2025-26 college basketball season and non-conference schedule away from home, the Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Purdue defeated Alabama 87-80.

Mayer shone off the bench with his hard-nosed defense, physicality, athleticism, and will to score that helped the Boilermakers tremendously. The rookie eventually finished with a stat line of seven points on 3-of-5 overall shooting, which included one three-pointer and two assists in around 17 minutes of playing time. His defense was also a highlight of his outing, as he was pestering the Alabama backcourt.

College basketball fans online were in awe of Mayer’s play, which may help him tremendously in his eventual vie for the NBA.

“Omer Mayer is jacked. Definite NBA guy, if not this year then next. #NBADraft,” one fan claimed.

“Omer Mayer stock going up like an escalator. Kid is stacking good possessions tonight,” another fan shared.

“Omer Mayer is a dog,” another user said.

Other X users shared their thoughts on how Mayer can impact the outlook and campaign of the Boilermakers as a whole.

“Omer Mayer. Special. That kid is capable of taking over a game by himself. Purdue has an embarrassment of riches,” one fan wrote.

“Omer Mayer is so smooth in the pick and roll for a freshman,” another fan pointed out.

“Purdue may have them another one in Omer Mayer, has been amazing so far off the bench running point guard,” a fan posted.

“Omer Mayer gave Purdue some extremely valuable minutes in the first half. You can see the potential just oozing from this kid. Purdue will be in great hands in the post-Braden Smith era,” a user asserted.

Mayer, a native of Tel Aviv, Israel, is in his first year of collegiate hoops and is looking to help Purdue reach the collegiate basketball mountaintop once again. Back in the 2024 national tournament, the Boilermakers made it all the way to the national championship game for just the second time in program history, last reaching it more than five decades ago in 1969.
