‘The United States of Gonzaga’ – Fans Debate the New Look of Pac-12 Hoops After Texas State Move

On Monday, June 30, Texas State University was voted into the Pac-12 Conference. The Bobcats will join Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Oregon State, San Diego State, Utah State and Washington State in the renewed Pac-12 from the 2026-27 season.

The welcome addition means the Pac-12 will be able to retain its right to consider itself as a conference with eight full time football playing members and nine in men and women’s basketball.

The college basketball community lit up the Reddit forum with memes, sarcasm, and strong takes after learning this development.

User IcyPerfected summed up the chaos with one line:

“Welcome to ‘The United States of Gonzaga.’”

This is because basketball-first Gonzaga is now surrounded by “State” schools that make the Pac-12 feel more like a high school geography test than a Power conference.

    Another user wrote:

“Gonzaga really ruining the whole State vibe of the rest of the conference.”

It’s clear that fans have noticed that the conference now includes Oregon State, Washington State, San Diego State, Fresno State, Boise State and now Texas State, with the lone oddball being Gonzaga. User dkknickwins commented on the situation, stating:

“At least we aren’t lying about our statehood like Boise, Fresno, and San Diego.”

Others saw potential in the conference. One fan added:

“This is a sneaky good basketball conference.”

    User skred_slamma_jamma also added:

“Here’s hoping the Gonzaga–St. Mary’s rivalry can be renewed.”

Though St. Mary’s hasn’t followed Gonzaga (yet) to the Pac-12, college hoops fans are hoping that iconic rivalry makes its way back into the national spotlight.

Texas State Was Elected Unanimously By All Board Members of Pac-12 Conference

On Monday, Pac-12 board members, which include all eight current members and future members, voted in Texas State unanimously. Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould welcomed the Bobcats in her statement, which read as follows:

“We are extremely excited to welcome Texas State as a foundational member of the new Pac-12. It is a new day in college sports and the most opportune time to launch a new league that is positioned to succeed in today’s landscape with student-athletes in mind.”

    It further read:

“Under great leadership from Dr. Kelly Damphousse, Don Coryell and excellent head coaches, Texas State has shown a commitment to competing and winning at the highest level as well as to providing student-athletes with a well-rounded college experience academically, athletically and socially.”
