United States President Donald Trump plans to reduce funding for American universities. As part of these cuts, there is concern that the NCAA could see a trickle-down effect. While cuts are not expected to affect the NCAA directly, they could affect it depending on their size. As funding for universities is reduced, they might be forced to allocate funds differently, which could lower the funds available for college sports.
Trump’s education cuts are coming at a time when the NCAA is preparing for a significant financial payout that will come from the House vs NCAA legal settlement. A federal judge recently approved the settlement, which will pay out many former and current athletes.
With changes to the American education financial system coming in America, there is concern that it could affect the NCAA. On Friday, fans discussed this topic in a thread on Reddit.

Fans were split over whether the cuts will have a significant effect on college sports.
“It already is in the form of department staff cuts (including assistant coaches) at a couple different mid-major schools I’m aware of,” one fan wrote.
“Purdue is going to be hit hard by the cuts to research and grant funding and international student admissions (I think WL is top 5 for campuses with the most international students) but, surprisingly, we also have one of only a dozen or so athletics departments that are fully self-sufficient. Ryan Walters posed a much bigger threat to Purdue sports than anything this administration can do,” one fan commented.
“Better not – the south will rise up if so,” one fan added.
Fans continued to react in the comments.
“Brother it is affecting e v e r y t h i n g,” one fan wrote.
“I hope so. Cuts should come from luxuries,” one fan commented.
“No. House vs NCAA will,” one fan added.
Only 12 NCAA Division I Schools Do Not Reportedly Receive Any Institutional Support
The decisions made by President Trump have a chance of having a significant effect on the NCAA. Of the 232 Division I schools tracked by USA Today in 2023, only 12 athletic departments did not reportedly receive any institutional support. Some of the exceptions were big football schools like Ohio State, Texas and LSU.
As a result, schools are expected to be significantly impacted by education cuts. If they are not receiving any institutional funding, cuts will need to happen somewhere. For some schools, sports will be the first thing they look at as a luxury rather than a necessity.
