Will Wade’s first stint as a coach for NC State has been off to a decent start this year. The team holds an 8-4 record, with losses only against some of the high-major programs like Texas, Kansas, Auburn, and Seton Hill. The Wolfpack recently defeated Texas Southern in a massive 108-72 win, though it wasn’t enough to satisfy coach Wade. Appearing in front of the media, Wade went on a fiery rant with a sarcastic tone.
“We have a 3.0 GPA,” Wade told reporters after the game. “That’s wonderful, if we’re running a daycare. We run a competitive basketball program. We’ve got a lot of casual personalities on this team.”
Coach Wade went on with his outburst, saying the win against Texas Southern was like a ‘Christmas gift’ for the Wolfpack a week early. He was majorly concerned about NC State losing some of its prominent matchups in high-major games. He added:
“I’ve been concerned for weeks. We are who we are. I said it a few weeks ago, ‘If you’re not physical and you’re not tough then you better be alert and aware.’ And we’re still none of the four.”
This season, Wade has been regarded as one of the best hires in the offseason carousel. He has a talented roster of transfers, including seven four-star transfers and Darrion Williams, a five-star prospect. But that’s not all to make coach Wade happy. Despite praising McNeese transfer Quadir Copeland and North Carolina transfer Ven-Allen Lubin, he further expressed his frustration, saying:
“”We got a lot of casual personalities on our team. We don’t have people that are revved up and ready to go. I had one of the kids come to me, ‘I’m tough, I’m tough.’ I said, ‘BullS**t, you’re not in the top 50 of toughest players I’ve coached.’ Not even in the top 50. I don’t want to hear that, you ain’t tough.”
Seems like Wade is trying to set the tone for NC State for the rest of the season. His fiery rant might motivate players ahead of facing Ole Miss on Dec. 21, before ACC play kicks in.
Will Wade Was Quite Impressed With Kansas’ Melvin Council
Kansas senior guard Melvin Council Jr. delivered a historic 36-point performance to lead the Jayhawks to a 77-76 overtime win against N.C. State, hitting nine 3-pointers to set a record for the Bill Self era.
Wolfpack coach Will Wade, who initially dared Council to shoot as part of his defensive strategy, admitted:
“Incredible, incredible performance by Council… Got a game he’ll probably tell his grandkids about that one.”
Despite a mid-game defensive shift, Wade noted that Council’s rhythm was unbreakable. He said:
“We adjusted after he hit the third 3, but he was in rhythm and got going. Give him credit. He played tremendous and made big shots for them.”
The victory allowed Kansas to avoid a winless sweep against the “Triangle” schools following earlier losses to Duke and North Carolina. After the grueling stretch, Bill Self joked, “Well, I’ve seen enough of the Research Triangle, or whatever you guys call it,” while acknowledging the high level of competition.
Looking at future scheduling and the necessity of high-revenue matchups, Self remained open to more elite series, concluding:
“The thing about it is with scheduling, money is going to dictate how you schedule… But I think that anytime you could play those three, the three that you just mentioned, and you throw Louisville in the mix. I mean, those are four teams that would be great.”
