This year’s NBA draft lottery could reshape more than just team rosters—it might influence the next move of Giannis Antetokounmpo. Following Milwaukee’s crushing first-round playoff elimination, speculation around the two-time MVP’s future has intensified. For the first time, Antetokounmpo is “open to exploring other teams outside the Bucks,” according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Long viewed as a symbol of loyalty, Antetokounmpo’s potential departure marks a turning point for the franchise. With a pivotal offseason ahead, Milwaukee must navigate uncertain waters as the league watches to see if its longtime superstar is ready to consider a new path.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Reportedly Open to Leaving Bucks Amid Offseason Shake-Up
The 2025 NBA offseason could bring massive change to the Milwaukee Bucks, with Antetokounmpo reportedly reconsidering his long-standing commitment to the franchise. Following another first-round playoff exit—Milwaukee’s third straight—league sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania that,
“For the first time in his career, he is open-minded about whether his best fit is remaining in Milwaukee or playing elsewhere.”
As Shams reports, Giannis’ availability will loom heavily over the lottery tonight, and the next six weeks leading up to draft night. Will any of the NBA’s asset rich teams – OKC, Brooklyn, Houston, San Antonio – make a strong push to get something done quick? Maybe on June 25? https://t.co/RbJPTsTf9q

This shift in stance comes amid a turbulent period for the Bucks. The team’s roster has struggled with both injuries and age-related decline. Star guard Damian Lillard sustained an Achilles injury during the playoffs, potentially sidelining him for much next season.
The franchise’s future looks uncertain without a reliable supporting cast and no clear avenue to build one quickly.
The Bucks’ financial flexibility and trade capital are also limited. They don’t own a first-round pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and won’t control their first-rounder until 2031 due to past trades for veterans like Jrue Holiday and Lillard. While those deals helped persuade Antetokounmpo to sign two max extensions in 2020 and 2023, the current lack of assets makes it unlikely the Bucks can replicate such moves.
Despite being under contract through 2028, Antetokounmpo is entering an offseason where a trade may be more viable than ever. According to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, his availability will be a significant factor in the NBA Draft Lottery and the lead-up to the draft. He notes that teams with significant assets—such as Oklahoma City, Houston, Brooklyn, and San Antonio—could be in a position to make aggressive offers.
Antetokounmpo’s loyalty to Milwaukee has never been in question. He stayed in 2020 and again in 2023 when many expected him to explore free agency. After the first extension, he led the Bucks to the 2021 NBA title, averaging 35.2 points per game and earning Finals MVP.

Though he plans to meet with the Bucks’ front office to assess their future plans, this marks a pivotal moment for both the team and player. Trading the 30-year-old, who averaged 30.4 points and 11.9 rebounds this season, may be the Bucks’ best shot at replenishing their depleted draft stash—even if it ends a 12-year era.
