Miles Byrd Shines at NBA Combine

According to reporter Jon Schaeffer, Byrd excelled in Scrimmage No. 2 on Thursday. In 27:06 minutes of play, he scored 13 points and also had four assists, four steals, and three blocks while playing guard.

Byrd was the second-best scorer for his team, the so-called “Team Lazare”, as former Kentucky Otega Oweh scored 14 points. However, his efforts were not enough to win the scrimmage.

A day earlier, Byrd also played as a starter in Scrimmage No. 1 and also stood out among his teammates. He finished with 11 points, one rebound, and four assists in 24:30 minutes of play.

The 6’7″ 20-year-old had a friendly face in the crowd as Dave Velazquez, his assistant coach at SDSU, attended both scrimmages. Velazquez described it this way to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

“Miles showed the best version of who Miles Byrd is. He’s a do-it-all guy. His stat line was very efficient, and he was able to impact the game on both ends of the floor with blocks, steals, and assists. He shot a good percentage from 3. He did a great job of playing within himself, but at the same time showing how impactful he can be.

“At this NBA level, where not every play is called for a guy, you really get to see who has really good instincts, who has a great feel for the game, and it was fun to know that Miles knows how to play the game.”

Byrd played for the Aztecs during his three seasons in the NCAA where he averaged 7.7 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. He shot 38.5% on two-point shots, 30.4% on three-pointers and 82.9% on free throws.

However, he was able to show his full potential in the recently completed season (2024-25). This was the only season in which he played as a starter, averaging 30 minutes per game in 30 games played, and his offensive and defensive records improved significantly.

In his final collegiate season, he averaged 12.3 points per game, 4.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists. He shot 38.1% on two-point shots, 30.1% from the perimeter and 83.2% on free throws.
