“Coach K Doing Everything He Can to Make It About Him”: Fans React As Mike Krzyzewski and Jon Scheyer Honor Duke Legend Johnny Dawkins

Current Duke Blue Devils coach Jon Scheyer and former tactician Mike Krzyzewski honored program legend Johnny Dawkins during his homecoming game. On Wednesday, Oct. 22, Scheyer’s Blue Devils took on coach Dawkins and his UCF Knights in a preseason game on the former’s home court, Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Being a legend of the Duke program, both as a player and a former member of the coaching staff, Dawkins was highlighted at center court during the game. In a video posted by @DukeMBB on X/Twitter, Dawkins is seen walking out on the court, where he was greeted by Scheyer and Krzyzewski. Krzyzewski even jokingly bowed down to Dawkins as a sign of respect.

College basketball fans online were not impressed with Krzyzewski’s reaction, as they felt that he was trying to be the center of attention.

“Coach K doing everything he can to make it about him,” one user captioned.

“Bowing down to man?! Duke coach might want to actually open his Bible and read what it says about that,” another user questioned.

“K trying to restart his hey everyone look at me tour,” a user wrote.

Other users are just happy to see a Blue Devils legend like Dawkins being honored by the likes of Scheyer and Krzyzewski.

“The GOAT, the Foundation, and the Future!!!,” one fan exclaimed.

“The Duke you see now is because of Johnny Dawkins time at Duke…All those Top 5 POC recruits did not come to Duke before Johnny Dawkins…They definitely had POC players before Dawkins but after him they came in droves,” another fan explained.

“What a moment, those three playing together would make an all-time back court…Johnny B, Goode in the background…Only at Duke…Special,” another user shared.

“KU Jayhawk here…J. Dawkins was such a smooth player – one of my favorites to watch as a youngster,” a fan said.

Scheyer, in his second stint at the helm of the Blue Devils coaching staff, led Duke to an overall record of 35-4 (19-1 ACC) in the recently concluded 2024-25 season. They made it all the way to the 2025 NCAA Final Four, where their national championship aspirations were halted by coach Kelvin Sampson’s Houston Cougars through a tight three-point defeat, 70-67, in this year’s national tournament.
