Duke, Michigan State Renew Basketball Rivalry, Schedule December Rematch of 2020 Champions Classic

The last time the Duke Blue Devils played on the Michigan State Spartans’ home court was in December 2019, an 87-75 win by Mike Krzyzewski’s Duke squad in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Earlier this year, talks took place to set up a rematch, which will be a return game from 2020, when the two programs met in the Champions Classic. Both programs worked with their respective conferences to make it happen, and now, it seems the Spartans and Blue Devils will battle in East Lansing, Michigan, for the first time since the 2019-2020 season.

Michigan State Set to Host Duke in December

According to CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, Duke and Michigan State will meet in East Lansing, Michigan, this December.

While this will be the first match between the two in Michigan in over five years, these two storied programs have played three times since then, including the aforementioned 2020 Champions Classic match in Durham, N.C., a Round of 32 NCAA Tournament showdown the following year, and an early-season game in the 2023-24 season.

Before their 2020 meeting, Duke and Michigan State had met 16 times, with 11 of those games being played on neutral courts. Michigan State was 0-for-3 all-time at Cameron Indoor Stadium entering the 2020 Champions Classic, and with a six-point, come-from-behind win, the Spartans won for the first time on Duke’s home floor.

It was Michigan State’s fourth win ever against Duke and its first since beating the Blue Devils in the Elite Eight of the 2019 NCAA tournament.

Michigan State recorded 33% on offensive rebounds and 78.6% on defensive rebounds, beating Duke’s percentages of 21.4% and 66.7%, respectively.

The game’s official date and time have yet to be finalized, but the official schedule should be released in the coming weeks.
