Miami Hurricanes Hoops Hire High School Coach Andrew Moran

According to college basketball insider Travis Branham, the Hurricanes are adding former Columbus High School head coach Andrew Moran to Jai Lucas’s coaching staff.

Moran was named the Naismith National High School Basketball Coach of the Year recently after having led the Columbus Explorers to four consecutive state titles.

Simply put, adding a high school coach to the coaching staff of a first-year head coach at the college level is an interesting proposition.

On one hand, Moran is one of the rising coaches in the country and has the accolades to back it up. But will he be a good enough asset to help Lucas find his way as a first-year head coach at a marquee school? Only time will tell.

Jai Lucas Looking to Bring Miami Back

Lucas was chosen to succeed legendary head coach Jim Larranaga, and he will have a lot to live up to. In his 14 seasons coaching at Miami, Larranaga made six NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Final Four, an Elite Eight, and multiple Sweet Sixteens.

Lucas is a former Duke assistant who coached under Jon Scheyer the previous three seasons and John Calipari at Kentucky before that.

While he is just 36 years old, he likely understands this era of college basketball better than Larranaga and will have Miami as a backdrop to help him recruit players.

With the help of a winning coach like Andrew Moran, Lucas should make some strides early on in his tenure in South Florida.
