Former 5-Star Recruit and Long Beach State Transfer Devin Askew Commits to Villanova

After scoring 18.9 points at Long Beach State, guard Devin Askew traded the palm trees for cheesesteaks. The oft-traveled guard lands at Villanova, capping a six-year journey that will encompass five colleges. Joe Tipton of On3 Sports broke the news.

Devin Askew Transfers to Villanova Ahead of 2025-26 Season

Despite leading the conference in minutes played (36), assists (4.5), and free throw percentage (88.6%), he did not earn any postseason awards or distinctions. Now, he heads to Philadelphia, a basketball hotbed, to play for Kevin Willard, looking to rehab his image after how he left Maryland.

Starring at Mater Dei High School (Calif.), Askew ranked as the seventh-best point guard in the 2020 draft class, according to 24/7. Back in 2018, 24/7 Director of Basketball Scouting Jerry Meyer described the newest Wildcats like this:

“Good physique for a point guard. More of a smooth athlete than an explosive athlete. Great body control and change of pace with enough of a burst. Dangerous three-point shooter with ability to score at all three levels. Has the ball on a string as a handler. Loves hesitation move going right and has a sharp pull up jumper going left.”

“Accurate passer who can deliver on the move and while under duress. Adequate on the ball defender who comes up with steals off the ball. Quality rebounder. High basketball IQ and skill level.”

Meyer projected Askew as a first-round talent, akin to former Michigan star Trey Burke. Things didn’t play out that way. His first stop, Kentucky, saw the play start 20 games, averaging six points on 34.5% shooting from the field.

Next, during his one-year stint at the University of Texas, Askew started only three of 34 possible games with a disappointing two points per game.

From there, he enjoyed his long stay in one play, at the University of California-Berkeley. In 19 games as a Golden Bear, Askew dropped 12.5 points per game. Last year, on the Long Beach State 49ers, the guard hit his stride. Now, how will he fit into the Nova system.?

What Does Askew Bring to Villanova?

Kevin Willard left Maryland under dubious circumstances. Now, he’s tasked with reviving a Villanova team that fell to the depths of the Big East. Askew looks like a valuable cog in the system. Jeff Neiburg, who covers the team for the Philadelphia Inquirer, details the role envisioned for the transfer.

“The fit at Villanova is obvious. The Wildcats needed a true point guard with experience and another perimeter weapon, especially after missing out on Maryland transfer Rodney Rice, who committed to Southern California earlier this week. Askew, who was once recruited by Jay Wright in 2019-20, is Villanova’s fourth guard pickup from the portal.”

“The Wildcats also have incoming freshman Chris Jeffrey, a top-70 prospect, and are apparently still in the running for another top freshman point guard, Acaden Lewis, though Askew’s arrival would probably limit the number of touches either freshman receives.”

    Overview

Basically, Devin Askew is a temporary hold while Villanova sorts out its younger guards. Under those circumstances, look for him to have the green light and provide some scoring punch in the interim. The multi-time transfer looks to end his college journey with a winning finale.

While Villanova’s future appears up in the air, they can rely on a veteran, unafraid of either the big moment or the pressure of the grind. After 110 college games in four different locations, Askew seems ready to take the next step.
