The Kansas Jayhawks are off to a steady start in the ongoing college basketball season. As of now, they hold a 3-1 record, with their lone loss coming against the UNC Tar Heels on Nov. 7. However, there has been one notable absence from the Jayhawks’ roster, with Darryn Peterson missing crucial games.
Peterson appeared in two games before going down with a hamstring injury earlier this month. He last played against North Carolina, scoring 22 points on shooting 8-of-14 from the field. Peterson is one of the star freshmen in college basketball this season, and his absence could make or break Kansas’ campaign.
So, is Darryn Peterson going to play in the game against Duke on Tuesday night? Here’s what the latest injury update tells us.
Darryn Peterson Injury Update
Coach Bill Self has confirmed that Darryn Peterson will be out for Kansas in the upcoming matchup against Duke. The game would have pitted Peterson, who was the No.1 overall player in 247 Sports’ 2025 basketball recruiting class, against Cameron Boozer, the No. 3 player in the injury class.
Bill Self said Peterson is getting the ‘best treatment’ and was dealing with ‘tightness in his right hamstring’ ahead of Saturday’s game against Princeton. In a recent statement, via Kansas Men’s Basketball’s official X handle, coach Self said:
“Darryn continues to make progress from his hamstring strain. He will be re-evaluated at the end of the week.”
Will Darryn Peterson Play This Week?
For now, all hopes for Darryn Peterson returning anytime soon look grim. As coach Self himself confirmed, Peterson continues to be rehabilitated from his hamstring injury and will be re-evaluated at the end of this week. During the game against Princeton on Saturday, Self told the Kansas City Star:
““We’re not, obviously, going to have him at least for the immediate future. I just don’t know how long that’ll be.”
According to coach Self, it is unclear when Peterson will return to action. However, as per all the assurances from Kansas’ coaching staff, it seems like the Jayhawks are playing it safe, given Peterson’s NBA future and how lingering hamstring injuries can ruin his prospects in the upcoming NBA Draft.
