Kanon Catching Transfer Portal: Top 5 Landing Spots for the BYU’s Forward

Kanon Catching has entered the NCAA transfer portal. The 19-year-old forward spent just one season with BYU and started 15 of 31 games as a true freshman in the just-concluded season. He moved to a bench role over the year’s second half and averaged 7.2 points and 2.2 rebounds across 17.4 minutes per game.

The four-star talent was the highest-rated recruit in BYU program history with a 0.9846 composite rating. He also shot 41.1% from the field in the campaign. The 19-year-old’s best moment for BYU came when he scored 23 points off the bench on perfect 8-of-8 shooting from the field in an overtime win against Baylor in January.

Top 5 Landing Spots for Kanon Catchings

Despite some impressive performances, there is a belief in some quarters that Catchings didn’t live up to expectations last season. The former Brownsburg standout and Purdue recruit left Brownsburg for Overtime Elite before his senior high school season and was a top-40 recruit in the 2024 class.

Catchings initially committed to Purdue but backed out of his commitment before signing with BYU in June last year. Catchings will now continue his career elsewhere after entering the transfer portal.

Catchings reportedly entered the transfer portal with a “Do Not Contact” tag. This means that the 19-year-old has already decided his next destination. Despite this, there are still speculations regarding where he would play next year. Below are some landing spots that could be of interest to the forward.

    1) Indiana Hoosiers

Catchings is a native of Indiana, which might make joining the Hoosiers appealing to him. He could be an excellent fit for Indiana’s pacey attack. The Hoosiers’ need for a forward is an open secret, and the talented forward could immediately impact the team should he decide to join his home state team.

    2) Purdue Boilermakers

Catchings was initially committed to Purdue but backed out and joined BYU. The Boilermakers could still be an attractive option for the 19-year-old interested in returning to a familiar environment.

    3) Oregon Ducks

Oregon has been a consistent program under the guidance of Dan Altman, and Catchings would thrive in the team’s system. The 19-year-old will also be able to continue his development in Oregon’s offense.

    4) Gonzaga Bulldogs

Gonzaga is widely known for its ability to attract top talents from across the country. The team boasts an experienced core that could Catchings and allow him to flourish. His ability to adapt to different roles will also be an essential asset for the Bulldogs.

    5) Michigan State Spartans

Not many programs can match Michigan when it comes to developing talent. This could make them an attractive option for the forward who will be keen to maximize his potential. Catchings could also benefit from the guidance of head coach Tom Izzo.

While Catchings may have decided on his next destination, the 19-year-old’s fate remains to be seen.
