Duke Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer has had the opportunity to coach some great players in his three years leading the team. This season, he is best known for coaching three top 10 picks in Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel and Khaman Maluach. However, he coached another player who was drafted, Tyrese Proctor.
While Proctor did not go in the first round like his teammates, he was selected with the 49th pick in the 2025 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. On Tuesday, it was announced that he signed a four-year, $8.69 million deal with the Cavaliers.

Jon Scheyer has been confident in Proctor for years. In March, after an excellent performance in the NCAA tournament, Scheyer spoke about how he thinks an NBA team should take a chance on him.
“You know with Tyrese,” Scheyer said. “You know I took over in April and Tyrese and I had a call May 31 to come a year early and, sorry (Scheyer apologized after starting to get choked up). I think we knew there’d be some rough patches and there were his first year, but he had some big time moments. He came on strong down the stretch and he could’ve made the decision to go pro even after his freshman year.
Scheyer went on to say, “I think he and his family, his mom and dad, they had such maturity to understand it’s more important to be ready than just be drafted, and so he doubles down, comes back, hug expectations. Me and Tyrese would both say his sophomore year didn’t go the way we wanted. I think that’s where it’s easy to split.
“So for this to happen to Tyrese, hitting seven threes and to be our key guy after going through all these moments. Like, if I’m an NBA team, I’m going after him because you have to handle adversity. I think that speaks a lot to his character…”
