The NBA draft withdrawal deadline has exposed significant roster challenges for high-profile coaches, with Jon Scheyer’s Duke and John Calipari’s Arkansas emerging among the casualties. A comprehensive analysis on the “Locked on College Basketball” YouTube channel highlighted these programs’ struggles in an increasingly unpredictable landscape.
Hosts Andy Patton and Isaac Schade identified five major programs as “draft deadline losers” painting a concerning picture for traditional powerhouses. The discussion revealed how even elite teams struggle to navigate the modern transfer portal and draft process effectively.

Penn State Emerges as Most Unprepared Program
Penn State topped the losers list according to podcast analysis, with Andy Patton emphasizing how the Nittany Lions appeared “the most unprepared to lose their star player to the NBA draft.” The program lost center Yanic Konan Niederhauser, who tested extremely well at the combine and gained real momentum to stay in the draft process.
Patton noted Penn State “does not seem like they have prepared for life without Niederhauser,” making only one transfer portal addition in shooting guard Josh Reed from Cincinnati. With three incoming freshmen but none at power forward, the podcast highlighted how “the odds of them finding a player as good as [Niederhauser] are slim to none.”
Duke and Arkansas Face Setbacks
Apart from losing the obvious three lottery picks, Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel, and Khaman Maluach to the NBA draft, Duke suffered an unexpected blow under Jon Scheyer’s leadership. Isaac Schade emphasized the surprising nature of losing Cedric Coward, stating, “I never in a million years at the beginning of the draft process would have thought we would have a conversation about him never suiting up for Duke.”
Coward’s decision to stay in the draft after strong combine performances forced Duke to scramble for replacements. While the Blue Devils secured Dame Sarr and the Boozer twins as replacements, Schade questioned whether “he brings everything to the table at the same level that Coward would do,” noting, “It’s a great add, but is it a Coward-level add? We don’t yet know that.”
Arkansas head coach John Calipari experienced significant roster losses, first watching Adou Thiero remain in the draft process despite some last-minute hope for his return. Schade emphasized the difficulty of this loss, stating, “It’s hard to replace someone of Thiero’s athleticism and capability and everything he brings to the table.”
The Razorbacks also lost key guard Boogie Fland to Florida after he had pulled out of the NBA draft and left Arkansas to commit to the Gators. While Carter Knox’s withdrawal provided some relief, Arkansas still faces rebuilding challenges.
Kansas and North Carolina Complete Losers List
Kansas faced setbacks in their pursuit of wing players, with Andy Patton explaining how they “not only missed out on Darion Williams, who withdrew from the NBA draft, but then committed to NC State.” The Jayhawks came up empty when RJ Lewis and Jamir Watkins “decided to stay in the draft process,” missing crucial opportunities to land impact transfers.
North Carolina also struggled significantly after losing Drake Powell. Isaac Schade observed, “We could have put North Carolina on the losers list for not being able to keep Drake Pal and not getting anyone really yet to replace him.”
Analysts emphasized that both programs could have pushed harder while these players remained in the transfer portal. Though their chances of returning from the draft were slim, landing either player could have dramatically improved their rosters.

With transfer portal options becoming increasingly scarce and draft decisions becoming unpredictable, some of these programs must now rebuild with fewer options available. The era of predictable roster management has ended, forcing even blue blood programs to adapt or risk falling behind competitors.
