Sean McDermott Key to Jaidyn Coon Commitment

Creighton will be delighted to have secured the commitment of one of the most highly rated prospects in the 2026 class, and head coach Greg McDermott played a key role in convincing the youngster.

Coon attracted the interest of many high-profile coaches. However, Creighton made him a priority. Creighton hosted him in Omaha and visited him multiple times in Storm Lake.

The 6’6″ junior from Storm Lake High revealed that he chose McDermott and the Bluejays ahead of offers from Iowa, Drake, Illinois, Iowa State, Nebraska, and TCU due to the coach’s influence.

“I’d have to say the fact that they were always checking in or even coming to my games. They checked in with not only me but my family too. The coaches seemed to care about me as a person and not just who I am as an athlete, and that’s super important to me,” Coon said after he committed to Creighton.

    Coon’s Steady Rise Analysed

The junior three-star is ranked the No. 135 overall recruit in the 2026 class and the No. 30 shooting guard prospect. Coon, who is ranked the No. 2 player in Iowa, is a SportsZone Boys Basketball Player of the Year finalist.

He led Storm Lake to its first IHSAA State Tournament appearance since 1994 and a 22–2 record. He recorded a Lakes Conference-best 24 points per game, shooting 50 percent from the field with 9.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and nearly two steals and two blocks per night during the run.

The 17-year-old also averaged 19.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2.0 steals, and 1.4 blocks as a sophomore.
