Ja Morant’s $26,202,577 Teammate Gets In Argument With Police Over Speeding Violations, Escapes With Just A Ticket

Ja Morant’s Memphis Grizzlies teammate Zach Edey has found himself in the mud. Not literally in one or even on the basketball court, but with the police this time. In footage obtained by TMZ, Edey was pulled over during a May traffic stop in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. He was going 100 mph in a 55 mph zone.

The police officer was stern in her approach to apprehend Edey. While pulling him over, she exclaimed,

“You know exactly why I pulled you over. You were going 101!”

But Edey, who is worth $26,202,577,  explained he was speeding to overtake a car in front of him. However, the cop didn’t seem to be quite amused. In fact, she seemed furious. She later exclaimed,

““You could pass someone at 80. Eighty? OK. One hundred?! One hundred is not OK. Ever. You were speeding before that, and that’s how you were able to get up to 100.”

She later informed Edey that this was a jailable offense, but she would not take her to jail. After Edey handed his license and registration, the officer gave him one citation for speeding and a second one for reckless driving. And before allowing Edey to go, the officer said, “Slow down.”

Edey was on his way to his alma mater, Purdue, during that time. He admitted to the speeding offense and paid a fine of $639.50. Perhaps this was a great lesson for Edey to be way more careful on the road.

Zach Edey’s teammate Ja Morant also got into worse troubles before

Zach Edey isn’t the only player getting into cop trouble at all. Edey’s star teammate, Ja Morant, had the worst share of experiences with law enforcement, one that even got him suspended from the league itself. In March 2023, the NBA suspended Ja Morant for flashing a gun on his Instagram live.

Two months later, Morant was seen brandishing a gun once again on Live video on his IG page. This led him to getting suspended for 25 games of the 2023-24 season for the same, as per CNN.

Unlike Edey, Morant didn’t really have to face any cop trouble. Following the incident, a civil lawsuit was filed against Morant, but in April 2025, all charges were dropped against Morant, with the judge citing self-defense and immunity for Morant. He had also filed a countersuit, accusing the other party of battery and assault.

Though the incident made Ja Morant infamous, he was able to overcome it pretty soon. In the 2024-25 season, Morant made a solid comeback, averaging 23.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 4.1 assists for the Grizzlies. He led Memphis till the First Round of the playoffs, where Shai Gilgeous Alexander’s OKC Thunder swept them.
