Italian 7’3” Prospect Plans Indiana Visit Amid Hoosiers’ International Recruiting Shift

Basketball is no longer just America’s game but a global phenomenon. But America continues to be the land of opportunity for players. This becomes somewhat clear when the world looks at the influx of international players entering the NCAA realm. Programs across the country are now even leaning into the global talent pool.

Indiana is doing just that. Under new head coach Darian DeVries, the Hoosiers embrace the global game with open arms. There are no speculations, no doubts—they are doing it. And now, they are looking at a 7-foot-3 Italian teenager packing his bags for Bloomington.

Hoosier fans might have something to look forward to. Not so long ago, On3’s Joe Tipton took to X and wrote, “An Italian 7’3” center is planning to visit Indiana and new coach Darian DeVries next week.” On June 17, Luigi Suigo, a 7-foot-3 center from Italy’s Olimpia Milano, is coming to town. And Suigo isn’t just tall.

Recently, at the Adidas Next Generation Tournament, Suigo went on to drop 21 points, grab 11 boards, and add four assists in the title game. So, it is not all that surprising that the Hoosiers want in. This upcoming visit says quite a bit about Suigo’s interests and the Hoosiers’ mindset.

With DeVries shaping his first roster, it’s clear he’s not afraid to think globally. With Reed Bailey potentially shifting positions and the frontcourt still needing clarity, Suigo could be the big answer to an even bigger question: Who’s anchoring the paint? But before, the fandom set their mind on Suigo being the answer. Indiana is not the only name on the visit list.

Before he sets foot in Bloomington, Suigo visits Purdue on June 6. Anhoperet that Matt Painter’s program practically breeds big men. There have been names like Zach Edey, Trevion Williams, and Daniel Jacobsen. The Boilermakers have built a reputation, and they’re hoping to add Suigo to that legacy.

Suigo has already been to Illinois in February and is also drawing interest from Kentucky, Louisville, BYU, and Texas A&M. That makes Indiana’s timing all the more crucial. The good thing is, DeVries and the Hoosiers aren’t starting from scratch.

They have tasted international talent with OG Anunoby, Uwe Blab, and Mangus Pelkowski. This is not uncharted territory; it’s a return to something that worked. With the current influx of international players, from Nikola Jokić to Luka Dončić, the European potential is enormous. This move could mean everything to the Hoosiers’ rebuild.

But what can Suigo bring to Bloomington? Suigo comes with rim protection, floor spacing, and a blend of European finesse and size. Whether Reed Bailey holds down the center or shifts to the four, adding a stretch-5 like Suigo could unlock new options.

To make things more intriguing, Suigo isn’t ranked yet. But it’s already pegs him as a four-iter. At 18, with a 9-foot-6 standing reach, he’s just getting started. Whoever manages to land him is not just getting height but also potential. And Indiana is putting their best foot forward to land the potential.

And come June 17, they’ll get their shot to make a very tall impression. DeVries might be able to lock down a dream roster if he lands the big man.
