Basketball fans across social media have been speculating about a potential family connection between Florida Gators’ NCAA champion Alijah Martin and former NBA All-Star Kenyon Martin. Their shared surname and basketball prowess have fueled rumors of a possible father-son relationship, especially after Martin’s championship run with Florida.
Despite the wishful thinking of basketball enthusiasts, Alijah Martin and Kenyon Martin are not related. The similarity ends at their last name and basketball talent. Family backgrounds reveal two separate basketball journeys that happen to share a surname but no familial connection.

The Tale of Two Martins: Different Paths to Basketball Success
Social media buzz intensified after Alijah Martin’s impressive performance in Florida’s championship run. Fans compared his explosive dunking ability and Kenyon Martin’s athletic playing style. Many posts speculated about a potential relationship.
Alijah Martin’s roots are in Summit, Mississippi, where he was born to Tina Martin and Randall Ridley on December 26, 2001. His mother, a middle school teacher and youth basketball coach known as “Mama Martin” to the Florida team, introduced him to basketball early.
“I was a basketball coach when Martin was born, so he had a basketball in his hands before he could walk,” Tina Martin revealed in a 2023 interview. She also shared how young Alijah would compete against his older sister, taking “lumps until he grew big enough to hold his own.”
Meanwhile, Kenyon Martin Sr. was born in Saginaw, Michigan to Lydia Moore on December 30, 1977. His family includes son Kenyon Martin Jr. (“KJ”) born on January 6, 2001 who currently plays for the Utah Jazz.
From NCAA Glory to NBA Aspirations
Alijah Martin cemented his collegiate legacy by winning the 2025 national championship with Florida after transferring from Florida Atlantic University. His journey includes making NCAA history by reaching the Final Four with two different programs, FAU in 2023 and Florida in 2025.
Martin’s performance in the Final Four against Auburn was memorable. He scored 17 points with two electrifying dunks that shifted momentum. “The best thing he does for us is just those momentum plays,” said Australian post Alex Condon about Martin’s impact.
After completing his collegiate career with a championship, Martin has garnered attention as a potential second-round NBA draft prospect. His defensive abilities and explosive dunking have enhanced his professional prospects as he prepares for the next stage.
