Former North Carolina guard Ian Jackson has become a major name in the transfer portal, with St. John’s reportedly leading the chase for the 5-star freshman.
Jackson, who averaged 11.9 points and 2.7 rebounds during his season at UNC, is believed to be interested in playing closer to home in the Bronx, with Madison Square Garden as a potential stage. Jackson could join newcomers Oziyah Sellers and Bryce Hopkins on Rick Pitino’s rapidly reloading roster.

Rick Pitino’s Red Storm Eyes Ian Jackson to Complete Backcourt
St. John’s continues to build what could be one of the most dynamic backcourts in college basketball, with former North Carolina guard Jackson emerging as a key target.
A five-star talent and Bronx native, he earned a place on the 2025 ACC All-Freshman Team. With Jackson in the transfer portal, the Red Storm has positioned itself as the leading destination.
Multiple insiders have echoed St. John’s status as the frontrunner.
“I still like St. John’s for Ian Jackson,” 247Sports’ Travis Branham said on the College Basketball Show. “That is still the case. The school that I’m looking at, aside from St. John’s, that could potentially make a move is NC State and Will Wade. However, I still give St. John’s a heavy favorite on this one.”
Jeff Goodman, speaking on “The Field of 68″ with Rob Dauster, backed that sentiment, saying,
“St. John’s is still the frontrunner here.”
He emphasized how Jackson’s addition could further elevate a roster already bolstered by key transfers.
“If you get that [point guard], your starting lineup again is friggin loaded—I mean absolutely loaded,” Goodman said.
He noted the team’s balance of shooters and athletes as a major improvement under Rick Pitino, calling him “arguably the best coach in the sport right now.” While Jackson remains uncommitted, his fit with the Red Storm is drawing close scrutiny.

“It would be unbelievable if they got Ian Jackson,” Goodman added. “Ian Jackson would have to beat out Sellers… Sellers is more important to them because they need shooters.”
Goodman also suggested Jackson might be best utilized as a sixth man if he chooses St. John’s. Though roster space and role clarity remain key factors, the program’s aggressive pursuit and hometown appeal make a strong case.
With Pitino’s strategic vision and Jackson’s scoring versatility, St. John’s may be just one piece away from completing a formidable backcourt rotation.
