    Former Purdue Star Zach Edey Caught Speeding at Nearly Double the Limit

    Zach Edey was charged with reckless driving after he went nearly double the speed limit last month. According to the newspaper IndyStar (via College Basketball Content’s X handle), the former Purdue Boilermakers basketball player was driving 101 mph in a 55-mph zone in West Lafayette on May 1 when he was pulled over .

     

    According to the newspaper Lafayette Journal & Courier, Edey was heading North on Indiana 25 in his Kia Sorento at 7:03 pm when he passed an Indiana State Police trooper’s vehicle heading South. The Memphis Grizzlies star turned East onto Tippecanoe County Road 700 South and was stopped by the trooper.

    The basketball player has an initial hearing at 10:30 am on Monday on a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving. He told police he was speeding because he was attempting to pass another car.

    Edey spent the entirety of his college career at Purdue and led them to an NCAA Tournament title game appearance in 2024. He was drafted No. 9 overall to the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2024 NBA Draft and is coming off an impressive rookie season.

    A look at Zach Edey’s rookie NBA season

    After establishing himself as a star at Purdue, Zach Edey is now making his mark in the NBA. The 7’4” center appeared in 66 games for Memphis this season, making 55 starts.

    Edey seems to have already established himself as someone the Grizzlies can depend upon. In his rookie campaign, he led the team in rebounding with 8.3 rpg. He added a team-second-best 1.3 blocks per game.

    Edey was also an efficient scorer this season, as he shot 58%, including 34.6% from beyond the arc, and put up 9.2 ppg.

    Although the Grizzlies were swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the playoffs, Edey showed that he can perform under pressure, just as he did at Purdue. He highlighted his defensive dominance even further in the playoffs, putting up 2.5 bpg. The center shot 66.7% in the postseason and contributed 6.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game.

    Edey found success in college basketball with the Boilermakers and successfully translated his skill set to the NBA in his rookie season.
