Former Heisman Winner Warns Ja Morant Of ‘Distractions’ In Miami, Atlanta Amid Trade Rumors

Ja Morant has been in the news for a few questionable reasons, including a rift with the Memphis Grizzlies. There has been suspensions and public call outs, and has the potential to turn ugly. There’s no surprise that this has resulted in trade rumors.

He is averaging a career-low 30 minutes per game and is shooting 38.3%. Morant was recently suspended by the Grizzlies because of conduct detrimental to the team. Morant showed frustration toward Grizzlies coaches and management for not giving him enough playing time.

Former Heisman award winner Cam Newton talked about the fallout. Newton shared how he experienced something similar and spoke about Morant’s past struggles with the law.

    He said at 1:05:

“He’s been able to find ways to get in trouble in Memphis. It ain’t a hard place to get in trouble. Memphis for Christ’s sake. Memphis. Just imagine if you had access to the distractions in Miami, Atlanta, New York, anywhere in Texas or Los Angeles.”

Newton addressed the trade rumors as well:

“So for him, Memphis is where you need to be, bro. I know that everything that you’ve been faced against you, you’re not a fake person and I respect that about you. But I tell you, bro, the grass ain’t always greener on the other side. And the situations ain’t always better either.”

Cam then drew from his own experience with the Carolina Panthers and how he did not know it was a blessing. However, he said he later realized it was a good decision.

Cam Newton Sends Message to Memphis Grizzlies About Ja Morant

While Newton gave some invaluable advice to Morant, he also talked about how the Grizzlies should handle the situation:

“There’s no denying the greatness of what Ja Morant has shown and what he’s capable of becoming. You [Grizzlies] have to make that right. From the ownership, executive leaders, from a general manager, president, I don’t give a dog on.

“There ain’t no Ja’s just walking around to leave. And for any player to bring relevance to an organization like Ja Morant did, you can’t find me one. Not in Memphis Grizzlies lineage,” he concluded how he wants Grizzlies and Morant to reconcile and work out their matters.”
