According to basketball reporter Dick “Hoops” Weiss, who broke the news of a rather intriguing entry into the 2025 transfer portal. In the wide-open waters of the NIL era, former Cincinnati and Texas forward Dillon Mitchell is a seasoned voyage. After previous stops with the Bearcats and Longhorns.
Now, he looks to settle in for at least one more trip through the college basketball universe. He enters the portal with 107 games played and 7.9 points per game.

Dillon Mitchell Leaves River City, Seeks New Home
Before Mitchell entered the college realm, Jerry Meyer, 247 Sports Director of Basketball Scouting, provided this assessment:
“At 6-7 has a long and thin build. Does need to build strength but has electric athleticism. Bouncy and runs like a gazelle. One of the top athletes in the 2022 class. A lefty with a sidewinder shot. His long-distance shot is his main weakness, but it is improving and solid in the midrange. Excels at attacking the rim and finishing with authority. Is a high-level rebounder who can initiate the break. Handles the ball well and sees the court and has a feel for passing. Can also run the lanes at an elite level. Defense is perhaps his best attribute.”
This looks pretty spot on. Mitchell cleans glass like Windex and does not back down when bounding downcourt or defending opponents. His two drawbacks are his three-point shooting (23.8%) and his free-throw percentage (48.5%). If he wants to garner drat attention, he must improve on those immediately.
Mitchell’s Best Landing Spots
Virginia
Ryan Odom starts his first year in Charlottesville, looking to reinvigorate a recently dismal program. The Wahoos can’t fall behind in the areas of interior scoring and rebounding, two of the aspects of Mitchell brings to the table in spades. Plus, bringing a tough-nosed forward into the fold will help change the reputation of the ACC playing a softer game of basketball.
Louisville
Eight of the Cards’ top ten scorers were seniors. Regardless of academic standing, at least half of them will leave, and Louisville needs interior help and control of the paint due to the simple process of attrition and loss.
After ranking 75th in total rebounding (37.3rpg). After seemingly a decade of floundering and falling from relevance, Pat Kelsey reversed the team’s fortunes in just a year. Louisville re-entered the national conversation. Kelsey can keep that going with a low-cost-high-reward signing of Mitchell.
Temple
Adam Fisher accepted the massive undertaking of injecting life into the once-potent Temple basketball program. Once upon a time, the Owls were a perennial threat in the NCAAS Tournament.
With their last win coming in 2013, Temple finds itself needing a way out. While Mitchell will not be a long-term solution, the fact that he can score with toughness and attitude will endear him to a fanbase that needs something to grab a hold of.

TCU
With just five NCAA tournament appearances since 1995, the Horned Frogs managed to turn things around under Jamie Dixon. Dixon brings a player-friendly culture and system to the floor. Mitchell needs a semblance of order and stability. In order to make it to the next level, he needs recent, stronger film in order to catch the eyes and attention of scouting/
Nebraska
The Cornhuskers are a football/volleyball school with a basketball program. Fred Hoiberg is trying his best to change that, though. Nebraska is a program that does not possess a long, distinguished postseason history.
With seven tournament appearances in 129 years of playing the game, there is room for improvement. The 2024-25 Huskers really didn’t excel in a single category. Instead, they felt that the available film said the exact same thing.
