Dylan Harper Joins 4X Champ Steph Curry in Rare NBA Family Club After No. 2 Pick

Dylan Harper is officially an NBA player. He has also joined an exclusive club featuring Steph Curry. After the former Rutgers star was selected No. 2 overall by the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday, he and his brother, Ron Harper Jr., became just the third set of brothers currently playing in the NBA who have an NBA alum father.

The brothers are the sons of former NBA star Ronald Harper, who won five NBA championships with the Bulls and Lakers in his 15-year NBA career.

Dylan Harper’s brother, Ron Jr., was also a Scarlet Knight. After going undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft, he started his professional career in the G League. Last season, he put up a record 11 three-pointers for the Pistons’ G League team, Motor City Cruise.

The Harpers join the Currys and the Nances as brothers currently playing in the NBA, whose father also played in the league. Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry is joined by brother Seth and father Dell, while Atlanta Hawks power forward Larry Nance Jr. is part of the club with brother Pete and father Larry.

Historically, four other families have been a part of this exclusive group. Portland Trail Blazers small forward Jerami Grant was once joined by his brother Jerian in the NBA, and their father, Harvey, spent 11 seasons in the league.

Mavericks star Klay Thompson’s brother, Mychel, played in the NBA, as did his father, Mychal. John Paxson and his brother Jim Jr. followed in their father Jim’s footsteps with careers in the NBA. The Barrys became a legendary basketball family when Jon, Brent, and Drew all built on father Rick’s NBA legacy.

The Thompsons have the most NBA championships of any family on this list — six. The Harpers are right behind them with five. As Dylan Harper gears up to begin his NBA career with the San Antonio Spurs, the Harpers could soon tie the Thompsons for this feat.

What Dylan Harper brings to the San Antonio Spurs

Heading into Wednesday’s NBA Draft, it seemed almost certain that Dylan Harper would be selected No. 2 overall by the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs did not seem interested in entertaining any trade conversations ahead of the draft, suggesting that they had a clear plan for their second overall pick.

San Antonio is seeking to build its roster alongside Victor Wembanyama and sees Harper as an essential piece to the team’s development. Harper is an offensive machine with an impressive all-around skill set and the makings of a lead guard. He will look to be an immediate difference-maker for the Spurs.
